Interesting Article on whether Gastric Sleeve is better than Byass or the Band

This is NOT coming from me, as you can clearly see.... this was an article regarding the future and viability of the Sleeve and comparisons to the bypass and lap band. This article has nothing to do with how long gastrectomies have been done.

The Sleeve procedure is fairly new based on its new technology, if it was not new surgeons would not constantly say so, it is NOT a full gastrectomy, my father had ulcers and had a gastrecomy in the 60s and he later passed away, so there is a DIFFERENCE in a complete gastrectomy and partial.

People post negative information and misinform people about the band all the time and sadly some newbies believe them, I post articles and have cited information to back up what ever I post.

I don't say anything when people post negative info about the band, it seems like there is a "coverup" regarding the Sleeve, I don't get it.

And I will DEFEND your right to post them...just as I defend MY right as a VSGer who is 4 years old.  Gastrectomies have been done for DECADES just because it's NEW to the WLS world means nothing.  I researched BEYOND the narrow field.

Full gastrectomies have been done for ill patients for decades, NOT partial, the Sleeve is still new.

Partial as well as full gastrectomies have been done for true enough ill patients who suffer from stomach cancer and ulcers BOTH surgeries depending on the person and the stomach.  So the research is truly out there on life with a partial stomach or no stomach at all.

I find this confusing. I admit to very little knowledge of the sleeve, whereas you obviously have had the procedure and also researched it.  This is NOT a critical or negative question but a genuine enquiry for information. Why do surgeons in the field refer to it as a new procedure?

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

It's "new" as a stand-alone WLS. It's been done as the stomach portion of the DS since 1988, and both full and partial gastrectomies have been done to treat ulcers and cancer since the late 1800s.

Hey Kate,

You aren't alone because I HATE when WLS professionals call partial and full gastrectomies a "new" procedure.  It's NOT even new in the WLS world because as MsBatt stated it's been part of the DS for a couple decades at least.

But I digress.  I know for ME I had to take my research AWAY from the WLS world in order to find LONG standing documentation about LIFE after a partial or full gastrectomy.  What vistamins are important long term etc.

Thanks for asking =)

I agree with Ms. Shell,
My father in law had a partial gastrectomy over 40 years ago due to stomach ulcers.  He lost weight, stayed active, and had no complications.  It is not a 'new procedure', it is an old procedure being used for new reasons.

No, they have been done since 1988 as part of the DS. That is not new.
