Doing it on your own...

A group of co-workers were walking on break and this lady was talking about how her daughter lost lots of weight.  She went from a size 20 to size 10.  What bugged me was she then added the sentance we all hate to hear..."I'm proud because she did it on her own"

I then said, "we all do it on our own".  I mean unless someone has you handcuffed to a sink and only feeds you bread and water.  But I knew what she meant and why does "doing it your own" make people proud???  Do these people really think I didn't work hard for this weight loss???  Do they think I get this surgery and poof magically I'm skinny.  I still can eat wayyyy too much and I can still eat the wrong foods (in fact it seems the wrong foods are easier to eat...what kind of crap is that!!!).  Proof of this is today a friend turned 40 and I ate 4 cookies and a cupcake!!!  See did the band clamp my mouth shut and not allow me to eat???  NO!!!  I also workout 9+ hours a week.  The weight didn't start coming off till I started to workout.  So the band doesn't do it for me!!!!  The band helps but...please if this thing helped as much as these poeople think I would be a size 6 by now!!!!

Ignorance is annoying!!!

I know what you mean . I had some comments made to me also about my surgery.   I wish them people could live me for a week and see how it really is and what I have to do to lose a damn pound for a week .  Sweat and tears is what I have to do , to lose a pound .

Like I tell the newbies on here . The band dont stop you from eating ice cream, a bag of chips, it dont make you exercise, and it sure dont stop you from eating around the band !!!

I can sit here and eat all day long if I want to , like you said the band dont clamp our mouth shut.

The band to me is exactly like how we dieted before

1. You have to make better choices in food

2.  You have to exercise

3.  You need to drink your water.

We was doing all them things before the band and we still have to do all them things , the ONLY thing the band does is help with portion control and to help curb hunger that is it nothing more nothing less.

It dont stop head hunger, it dont stop emotional eating, it dont stop nothing .

I have to work just as hard as before I got the band to lose weight the only thing that has changed in my life is my portion control .  I still have to drink water, I still have to exercise, and I still have to make the healthy choices in order to lose weight.

Screw them people !!!!!!!

I couldn't agree more.  It takes a lot of work.  I pay a lot of attention to you on the board since you tell it like it is!  Your experience is one of the reasons I have chosen not to tell people I have had surgery.  I just tell them I am using a medically supervised program in which I eat 5-6 small meals a day and exercise alot.  When they persist I tell them it is sort of south beachy---I have not idea if it is but a friend said it was so that is what I used to close the subject.

Basically I just don't think it is anyone else's business---
Hang in there and forgetaboutit.

Yeah, she "did it on her own" and sooner or later she'll regain that weight all on her own.

This reminds me of a saying I once heard - I'm probably mis-quoting it - along the lines of: "I can lose my weight but you can't lose your stupidity." Or something like that.

If someone made a remark like that in my presence, I'd be torn between bludgeoning the person to death or giving them an enormous and very sharp piece of my mind. Or maybe both.

I think people confuse lap band with gastric bypass. The band is a tool that requires a ton of work, including psychological and emotional restraint from food issues. The people I know who had gastric still eat the same crap they ate before, just less of it, do not exercise, and lose a ton of weight.

The best part is that you know the truth and have the pride that comes with making the right choices everyday, even on the cookie/cupcake days!

Well I explaied to the ladies about the RNY and the level of weight loss excpected.  I told them even with the RNY a lifestyle change needs to happen.  Sure in the beginning the person with RNY will lose lots of weight with hardly any effort.  But if they aren't careful after the "honeymoon" period they will stall and even start gaining.  All surgeries require work and effort.  The RNY requires the person to change their habits and lifestyle just like we do or they will eventually fail too.  I know someone who got RNY surgery and she didn't comply with any rules and didn't change any bad habits.  Sure she lost weight at first but now 6 years later she is back where she startred.  Just goes to show you that we all have to work hard to change.

this was the exact reason i decided to only tell a handful of people they don't understand and it has been the hardest journey and i'm still trying to shift the weight. rude comments from my partners family made me pile the weight on and now i'm doing it for my self and i dont have anything to do with them as writing things on social networks about my weight; they are not the kind of people i need around!!!!!
now i am so much happier and if we all are happier and healthier who are they to judge?
