Now I'm at 1000 calories
VSG on 07/10/12
This past week, after 6 months of very slow progress, my nutritionist has taken away 200 calories. I wasn't losing anything remarkable on 1200 calories, so after much frustration, she recommended I try 1000 and see what happens. She recommended upping the protein to about 70-80 grams a day, and cutting back on carbs. Adding the protein has made me feel fuller faster. And the change in the weather, all the hot and humid days the last week has helped me feel very full as well.
So, we'll see what progress happens this Wednesday when I weigh in with her again.
She said she doesn't believe in calories, but she believes in protein.
Has anyone had this experience?

Are you exercising???
I exercise 90 minutes a day, 6 days a week. I recently had to increase my calories due to my intense workouts. With exercise you can eat more and still lose weight. I'm at 1400 calories and still losing weight. It's a lot of hard work to exercise but I lose weight more quickly eating more food. I am less likely to regain because of I weight train.
This is what works for me.

I had my surgery in December too. I lost between 43-47 lbs. depending on the day (some of the weight lost on the 2 week pre-op diet). Anyway I haven't lost anything in over 2 months. Its very frustrating. I go to the doctor on 6/21 and maybe I can make an appointment with the nutritionist. Good luck at your next appointment!

Andrea:
The nutrtionist thinks I am insulin resistant, so that is why she is switching around my calories and lowering the carbs.
I didn't lose anything on the two week pre-op diet, and in fact had a stomach virus which kept me on chicken broth and crackers for one of the two weeks.
Most of the weight came off in the post op period and during times when work wasn't so demanding on my time. I discovered snowshoeing and did that at least once a week.
Now, my time is more limited and I'm working out about 2-3 times a week...
We'll see what the scale says next Wednesday after trying 1000 calories for a week.
I can tell clothes are fitting much better, but I have not weighed myself since.
Thanks!
Mary

I agree whole heartedly with your nut. Protien is vital, as is reducing carbs. It's my understanding there are really no studies to back up the idea that your body goes into "starvation mode" when you reduce calories to drastically. I ate low carb, low fat, high protien, and probably about 1000 calories a day, and lost 107 pounds in 10 months. I think you have gotten some good advice, keep us posted on how it works. Best wishes!

Seeing that I'm a short person, I can probably handle fewere calories and get away with it....
I used to tell myself that a 5'2" person doesn't need to eat a lot of food.
Also I explained to my nutritionist that on WW, when you exercise, you add back in the calories expended, which I never did anyway. She was totally mystified by that theory. The idea is to eat less and exercise more.
With my awful work schedule, I'm limited to only a few days a week, anyway, so I have to try less food to make up for it.
Thanks for the encouraging words!
Best,
Mary

I think your NUT may be on the right track.......what works for one person won't for another so you have to try different things.......me I always worked out and still became morbidly obese so I have to do a combination of both for some only calorie restriction works......... but I found that with around 900-1000 calories and under 50 grams of carbs I can lose......anything different from that and forget it (of course that isn't easy for me and life gets in the way so I am up and down).
Point being it is basically a mathematical formula calories in vs calories expended and everyone is different..... if you find this particular plan works for you (and I hope it does) then great if it doesn't don't give up try different things till you get the formula that works for you.
Studies are changing the norm all the time.......now they say 3 ten minute sessions a day have the same if not a better effect than working out for 30 min. at once for fat burning. In my opinion the only exercise that works is one that a person can do, has time to do and thinks it is at least a little fun or motivating.
So you are on the right track, don't give up and you will find the magic numbers..... they may have to be changed from time to time once your body becomes used to the "plan" but you are on the right track and have the right attitude!!!!!
Keep us posted,
Michele

Hi Michele:
You are so right!
I've never consciously eaten only 1000 calories before as part of a plan, but I have to give it a try.
Otherwise, I'm going to be stuck here for a long time....
And all those little scars on my belly will be for naught!
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I will post my progress, and I hope it's post-worthy...
Cheers!
Mary

Also keep in mind that if it is a plateau then that can be a good thing.....sometimes our bodies just need a break.
Those scars aren't for naught, would you be where you are now without the band?? I am three years out and still not at goal........not far but not quite there 10-15 heck my body just likes where it is at (I don't though LOL)...........however would I be where I am now without it......in fact knowing the direction I was headed I would be heavier..........
Oh, please continue to post your progress, remember progress doesn't always mean pounds.....inches and feeling great count also................ just don't give up you are not alone in this struggle.............
