I had my band unfilled about a month ago and at that time I was told that my esophagus was enlarged and twisted.  I am going to a gastro guy on Mon to see what is next.  I have noticed in the past week that my port is hurting and the heartburn and burping is awful.  I didn't have heartburn before my unfill but now it is really bad.  Anyone else had these problems with an unfill and does anyone know what a twisted esophagus means?  I can't really find any info on-line about it.

You should call and ask your doc that you told you your esophagus was twisted?  Your band doc  needs to know about all of your symptoms since your unfill.  I would want to make sure there wasn't a slip or erosion.  Your port shouldn't be hurting.

My doc told me that it was twisted because I was too tight for so long, he said we will do another check in about a month which should be next week.  My port has hurt on and off through out the 4 years I have had my band and usually for no reason at all???  I will be asking him about why it could be hurting now.

Hi Amy,

I'm so sorry to hear this. I had a similar kind of problem, actually. My stomach twisted into a Figure 8 from the band being incorrectly placed. It made it very difficult to swallow, I had horrible burning pain in my esophagus and it was miserable!

Hopefully the unfill will help with the twisting, but as for the enlarged part, I think once the esophagus is dilated, it takes quite awhile for it to "fix" itself, if it is able. All I know is that the band can make it more difficult for the esophagus to do its work in the way intended and that can cause it to "bunch up" and then become enlarged.

I hope that you can get some answers on Monday. I know it's kind of scary, but you can get through it.  They might give you something prescription strength to combat the heartburn and hopefully that will give you some relief.

Take care. Hope you feel better soon,
Nicci

Thanks... I think I can live with a twisted esophagus but who knows... I don't really feel it other than a slight burning in my chest which could also be from the constant asthma I am having these days... I am ready for Monday.
