Uncomfortable heartburn in AM

I am new to this site and looking for a little help.  I had my band surgery on May 17 and I am experiencing lots of heartburn.  I don't think its from eating to much I feel it the most in the morning and inbetween meals.  Is this normal?  Anything I can take to make it better?  I take my vitamins and an acid soluable pill every morning.  The heartburn comes and goes all day, sometimes worse than other times.

Thanks,
Jenny

What helped me more than prescribed meds was over the counter chewable Pepcids, any burning goes away immediately also if you chew a few papaya enzymes from GNC. along with a Pepcid that combination works miracles.  Also if you are drinking crystal lite that gave me a lot of trouble..any thing with acid, like lemon aid, chocolate, mints  gave me heartburn.

Also you are newly banded and you probably will have MORE acid and heartburn in your first year since your band is still healing, also eating too much can sometimes cause heartburn and nausea also so make sure your meals are small. Good luck

Call your surgeon and ask him to do a barium swallow under fluoroscopy

Also I forgot to mention, if you are vomiting frequently which you did not mention you may be too tight, and if you are vomiting with your meals with heartburn you may need to get a small amount of saline out.

Thank you for your help.  I have not vomited at all so I guess that is good.  I have not had a fill  yet and the nurse at my last visit said if my weight loss is good I should save the fill for a later time.  I feel the heartburn the most when my stomach is empty.  I will try the pepcids.  Thanks.
It also sometimes hurts when I take a deep breath in.  I am sure this is normal, but just want to make sure.

Ok, good that's what I thought, sometimes unfortunately in the first few months the band can cause a lot of acid and burning especially when it's healing, and not due to being tight, sometimes you may feel better with getting a fill..believe it or not getting a fill will actually block the section of your lower stomach and this prevents stomach acid from rising up to your esophagus causing heartburn...this has nothing to do with being tight, I knew you did not sound like you were too tight but I just wanted to make sure...those pepcids will help you immediately and if you don't have papaya enzymes they will be your best friend forever with your band, but the chewable Pepcids should help you and also getting a small fill may also help you to relieve some heartburn, if you don't need a fill now you should talk to your surgeon and ask for just a small one to help keep the acid down.

Good luck your journey

You are also still healing from your surgery and may be experiencing irritation of the esophagus.  I would be really cautious when taking meds in the a.m. and ALWAYS take them after you have some food or a protein shake.

Are you having reflux or just the burning feeling.  Hearburn is very un-common in the a.m.  I'm betting it's the meds dissolving in your pouch or esophagus which can be very painful.

When in doubt it's always best to ask your surgeon, but try taking your meds with food or at the very least, plenty of watter to make sure they dissolve in your stomach, not your throat!

Best~

Thanks everyone.  I talked to the nurse at the Dr. office and she told me to moniter it and let them know if it does not go away by the end of this week or they want to see me.  I am not vomiting and do not have any acid coming up.  I just feel like a burning, tight feeling between my boobs.  Not sure if this is normal or not.  It seems to be the worst in the morning, when I am hungry and at night, when I am hungry.  It also hurts sometimes when taking a deep breath or trying to burp.  I am going to moniter it today and tomorrow and then try to call for a visit.  I have started to take my vitimans and acid pill after my breakfast to see if that works.
