Swelling and serious bruising.  Does anyone know if this is normal for the area where the port is?  The bruising has gotten much larger than the bandage and I noticed last night it was hard and swollen.  I put a cold compact on it for a while and stopped cleaning my closet.  I may have been overdoing it.  Please let me know if this is normal/abnormal.
Thanks!

Hello...I would recommend NOT touching your port area, also don't le****er hit it for at least 3-4 weeks, let the bandage stay there if you can also if you take a shower try to avoid letting water hit that area and wear loose fitting clothes, your port area will be painful for at least 6 weeks, and you still may experience some minor discomfort for a few months since it is still healing.

Also you don't have to worry too much unless that area gets warm and puss filled otherwise it's probably normal, but if you experience unusual pain please contact your surgeon. Good luck.

I am about 2 weeks out and I had the same bruising and hardness. It was a little scary but it does get better 1 day at a time. I could not lay on my port side for about 1 week. The recliner was the best place for me and then I transitions back to my bed. Just take it easy call your surgeon if you are unsure about anything. Get plenty of rest and you will feel better in no time. Lots of luck to you!

My port site was swollen and tender to the touch for MONTHS, seriously.  I even went to the doctor to have it checked because I was concerned with infection.  As long as the area is not red, warm or ***** (sorry, I know that's gross), you are probably fine.  It takes the longest of anything to completely heal.  Totally normal...just take it easy. Hope you have a smooth recovery! :)

I had the same problem with my Port site. It was the most painful part of everything that happened. I was worried about the hardness of it too but the Dr just said its because thats where the port is and you will be able to feel it but it will soften up a bit once you heal. I am a month out and I just recently have been able to lay on my stomach. Cant lay completely on it but Im getting there. Just take it easy and take this time to relax and heal. And walk! It might not seem like it but the walking every few hours helped me with the pain alot. The fresh air cant hurt either lol. Take care of yourself! Let us know how your doing

Thank you everyone for the responses.  As you can see in the picture my bruising is far exceeding the bandage.  I wasn't sure if this was normal.

can't see your photo, but I can tell you I had a huge bruise over the port area, post-op and it was sore for weeks afterwards.  Follow your doctor's instructions...you will get all kinds of advice on here telling you what to do, but your doctor is your best resource for advice for things like this.  I was told to shower daily starting 48 hours post op and to remove my steri strips 10 days post op.  I got a huge allergic reaction to the adhesive they used to apply my steri strips and had to actually  loofa my incisions for about 3 weeks to get rid of the itching, redness and swelling...
For any questions, please call your doctor.
Steph

I just had my port removed 2 weeks ago and it is still swollen, hard and bruised. The swelling actually increases as the day goes on and I noticed yesterday that it has bruised even more.

Call your PCP and have her take a look at it.
