Short Term Disability - Self Employed?

I know some people have had thier STD insurance cover bariatric surgery, but my husband and I are both self employed. It seems like everywhere I look, STD is only offered thru an employer.

Does anyone know of a STD plan that is available directly to the subscriber? My husband is getting surgery too, and I would be nice to get something back. Thanks!

Hi Stefanie,

You could check with AFLAC, but there might be a waiting period.  Also, you might call a local insurance agent and ask them about STD ins.  They might have some info to offer you.

Good Luck!

STD does not pay for the surgery - it pays for the time you need to be off work.

For me, it paid for 6 days ------ (Had my surgery on a Friday and took the following week off).
I would think that by the time you paid the premiums, it might not be worth it.

Lots of people only take 3 or 4 days off work for LapBand surgery.

Our medical insurance is covering the surgery, but was hoping to have something to cover the time off.

I have found out that  STD is ONLY available thru employers, oh well! So if you have it - Dont get rid of it =)
