Gastric Band Scheduled, Dr. Aceves - Any advice on scarring?
While researching physicians I selected Dr. Ganta (in Austin, TX) and Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. In the end I have selected Dr. Aceves because he did my mom, dad, and brothers lapband. I am worried however because their scars are quiet prominent. I am 25 years old, 225 llbs 5'7" - I am being banded as my weight gain has been constant and substantial over the last 3-years (I was 160 at 22). I know Dr. Ganta does a single incision approach howeve he is twice the cost of Dr. Aceves and I've read that the single incision approach can be risky.
Anyone have any tricks for minimizing scarring? Has anyone had the single incision approach? I am so elated about the surgery, but apprehensive about the scarring..
Thanks for your help!

There is really no way to get out of having scars. I can tell you that most of them are not too large and that they fade over time. I had my gallbladder out like 12 years ago and you cannot really see the scars. There are some slightly reised ones but they are now flesh color. At about a year out of my lapband surgery my scars are raised but very light in color. I think alot of it has to do with genetics and just plain old how well you heal etc.
I was just banded and my incisions are still healing, so I can't comment on band scars, but I have had 2 c-sections. After which I used Vitamin-E oil on the scar and you can barely see the scar now. So, that is an option for scar care. Also, I've heard Mederma works really well for scars. I mainly use the VItamin-E oil because it's alot cheaper than Mederma.
When I had to have neck surgery I was concerned because the incision was right in front at the base of my neck. I splurged and bought the Mederma and now I must really search to find the scare. With my lap band surgery I used Vit. E capsules that I stuck a pin in and rubbed it into ea*****ision. I am not 18 months out, down 125 pounds and you can't even see my scares. Just remember that everyone has different types of skin so they heal differently. If you already have Vit E at home I would go with that. Apply it several times each day and rub it in really well. As an after thought I have seen neosporin comercials advertise that it reduces scaring. Best of luck to you in your surgery and in your weight loss success.
