This morning I received a recipe e newsletter and it had a great quickie slide show to show how much portion sizes have increased over the last 20 years. According to these people, our portion sizes have tripled!

My mom grew up in the 40's and 50's and she's said that when she would go out to eat -- there was seldom anything left for a doggy bag. Dinner out was served on one small what we would consider a "buffet" sized plate today. What a difference from today!

Portion sizes are out of control. The sad thing is you talked about bringing home a doggie bag...I never brought home a doggie bag. I would eat an appetizer and eat my whole meal. I can't think of one time when I didn't finish my meal. Now I look at the portion sizes and think "did I eat all of that, no wonder I was fat!!!" I used to eat a whole medium pizza by myslef and now I can have 2 squares and I'm satisfied. ...and I actually think 2 small squares is 2 servings!!!
After 2+ years I still measure out most of my foods. I find if I don't... I serve myself a lot more than a serving. I actually keep a set of measuring cups at work too.

Good point! I am amazed at how my portion perception has changed since surgery. Often, for lunch I will eat tuna salad on 6 ka****riscuit style crackers. Before surgery I would've eaten at least twice as many crackers topped with tuna salad. A while back I was pouring the crackers out of the box and something like 12 or 13 spilled out onto my plate and my initial reaction was WHOA! THAT IS A LOT OF CRACKERS!!! I could never eat that! Then I remember I often did. How cool is that? : )
