Today the NUT told us that after my procedure (a Friday morning) that I will drink nothing until Saturday morning when I go for my barium (sp) swallow. I think I will get thirsty. Were you allowed to drink after your procedure?

No, I was not allowed to drink either. I think it's standard procedure. They need to do the barium swallow first, to make sure everything is in the right place. Boy did tha****er taste good when I could have it! It was lime flavored, which I don't like, but I didn't even care. You will have an iv- so you won't get dehydrated. Bring chapstick, your lips will get dry. Congrats on your impending surgery!

I was allowed to drink.  I had my surgery at 1pm and by 5pm I was eating my first post-op meal...which consisted of broth, jello and water.  I didn't fini****  I can tell you that if you are like me you will be still woozy from the surgery to think about thirst.  I was drifting in and out of sleep the rest of the day.  My surgeon has us stay one night in the hospital.  The next day I wasn't feeling well at all and the nurse said I was very dehydrated and I had to have two IV bags of  fluids.  I just didn't feel like drinking or eating much after surgery.

I think I remember the same thing when I had my surgery.  I couldn't drink but they allowed ice chips to keep your mouth and throat moist.  Make sure you ask for that if they don't offer it.

You'll be fine.  Don't worry.  If you in the hospital you will be drifting in and out of sleep most likely anyway.

Best~
