Hi! Got revision surgery date.....mixed feelings

Hi!  As some of you know I have had problems with my band.  Constant regurguation, unfills, etc... so my surgeon has recommended (and myself too) to revise to bypass.    I was initially denied, so I appealed and got approved.

I am really sad that the lap band did not work for me.  I did do well until my 1st complication and unfill in Sept. 09, weight loss completely stopped, even tho I did everything I was supposed to do, and tried for a fill Sept. 10 (exactly a year apart and during the Walk from Obesity event) and had more complications that I had developed a slight fever and my surgeron did not recommend any more fills.  It just got really bad since then.   It was bad especially when vomitting back up food at work and people giving me looks.    I would have maybe 5-10 good eating days a month.  I miss being able to eat good dense protein packed food.   Right now I'm on soft food for the time being and getting a complete unfill soon.

My quality of eating and life has gone downhill.  Quality of life by that I mean, I don't like going out to eat with friends in fear I have to go to bathroom.   On my last date with a guy we had gone out to Teriyaki place.  The chicken was really moist, juicy etc yet I threw it back up and yes I chew it really well.  (the next day we broke up, but that wasn't the reason  haha.. there was just no spark there at all and it was mutual)

As a result I have regained some weight back and I feel gross.

I will never bash the band, just want to be sure when you are thinking of WLS, do your research thoroughly.  I will not involve myself in the bashing drama here on this board, ever.  Everyone is different.

It does take alot of work on your end as the band is just a tool and there to help you.   It is not a magic tool.  (Yes, I know with bypass I have to do the work too)  I am happy for people that have had success with the band!

I will still come here on this broad from time to time and give support and share my experiences, good and bad.

I have met some really awesome people here which I am really glad I have.  Jean M.,. Lisa O., Amanda T., ShrinkingSmilies, Tiff, etc and I am sure I will see some of you at the OH event, which also falls on the same weekend of my 25th high school reunion.  A very busy but a great weekend!

So my surgery date is August 1st and I have to admit that I have mixed feelings, sad, happy, pertifed, scared, which is normal.  Sad to see my band go.  Aware that the bypass surgery is permanent.  I do not regret having lapband placed at all ever.

I will definitely stay in touch around here.

Take care!

Hi Cheryl,

My heart goes out to you. I wish you great success with your bypass, you've learned a lot of good band eating skills that will help you make your transition to bypass easier than it would be for a newbie. It is totally normal to have all of these feelings surrounding the band removal and a revision -- it's a big change. I applaud you for your great attitude about all the challenges you've face.

Wow!  You're really going to do it.  I kind of lost touch and was wondering about you just recently.  You know I'll always be in your corner, so let me know anytime you need to "talk".  It will be fun to compare notes on the differences between surgeries.  Truly, my only concern for you would be the vitamin regime.  You're going to have to be VERY dedicated to getting everything you need (vitamins) to stay healthy looking and feeling great!  I know you can do it though! You're one determined lady!

See you at the OH Conference!

You will be a resounding success with your new tool and I am thrilled that you were approved for it! After all, isn't the goal of all wls to help us overcome the effects of obesity so that we can enjoy life with improved health? I understand the mixed feelings, but honestly, REJOICE! Please, keep us posted, and those of us you have gotten good support from in the past will be happy to continue giving it.

God bless, Sue
