It seems we read about these breakthroughs all the time, but I really believe that some day science will find the genetic link for obesity that will allow us to treat our problems by altering our chemistry rather than our anatomy. Lets hope its in our lifetimes, so that those we love can be spared the indignities of obesity.

I read this story on Yahoo and you should read all of the comments people left. People saying things like stop eating and start exercising. I hate people like that. Can they even begin to understand the huge amount of work, dedication and patience it takes to lose a large amount of weight??? I'm sure these people have gone on diets to lose 10 lbs and think it's not a big deal to lose 10 times that much. I have lost 150 lbs and it has been the hardest thing I have ever done....and I have the band to help me.
I realize it was my fault that I weighed 354 lbs. But it's also some people's fault they have heart disease, or COPD, or in some cases cancer....I don't see people going around putting them down for putting themselves in the predicament of having serious health related issues. Nope it's only fun to put us down!!!

Cmagouirk,
The reason that happens is because it's still socially acceptable to discriminate against the obese. It's less recognized as a form of discrimination and more accepted. I agree, that the victim blaming aspect of people's reaction to being fat is unfair. I'm happy to accept responsibility for my weight, but I'm not happy to accept judgment or blame from others when they know nothing about my situation. Trust me, I'm hard enough on myself.
