Hello Board...

I am new to the Forum..I went to my physician on Fri (5/13/11) and I asked if I he would approve me for Lapband surgery.  I havebeen researching for the last 7 months or so, and even went to a seminar with my Mom to educate us both further.   I am 36 and I have diabetes, high blood pressure and tachecardia.  I started out on Lantus for my glucose control and that only landed me with higher weight and unconrolled diabetes.  Then Byetta was discovered and I have lost a total of 100 pounds on my own...but now I have developed side effects from it.  I sweat constantly.  By 10 am every morning I am completely saturated.  I am constantly using powders and body sprays on my clothes in fear that I smell.  I am a dental hygienist also, who wants someone leaning over their mouth with sweat on their brow...Thank goodness for full facial shields!

My doctor doesn't want to switch back to insulin since my pancreas is working on it's own with the Byetta and I am keeping the weight off, but my blood pressures and pulses are sky high.  My physician is certain that Lapband will help me and I am more excited than ever.  My friends (or what I thought were friends) are all giving me grief on this surgery, but they have no idea what my daily life is like.  To wake up every morning and have to swallow 8 blood pressure pills every morning, walk around wet from perspiring, and not to mention being alone, (they all have husbands).  But who wants to love on a "Sweaty" woman?  I know if the shoe were on the other foot, I would find this repulsive myself.

I have read many of hte entries today and I have sat here and cried.  It feels so good to actually read positive remarks and to relate to all this.  I am so glad I found this forum and I am making my surgeon appointment in the morning!

Thank you all for posting and sharing your stories....

Hi Paula!  Welcome to the boards!  I understand all of your concerns and what you have been going through dealing with obesity...we all do.  So take comfort in that and the fact that you are taking charge of your health by getting the Lap-Band.  Let us know if there is anything you need on your journey.  We all "band together" (haha, pun intended) to help each other.

Congrats on your decision towards a new life! :)

So glad to see you on here.  Everyone has to make the choice that is best for them.  I just told my closest friends that I was doing it.  I didn't ask their opinion because how can they have a valid opinion on something they have not researched as I did.  You definately need to research, research, research.  Then make your best decision.  No one lives your life but you.

Welcome Paula!

Reading your post reminded me of when I decided I wanted lap-band surgery - the people *****ALLY know me did voice any objections, most likely because they know when I've made up my mind about something, that's that! LOL

That doesn't mean there weren't people who tried to discourage me - but I didn't give those comments a second thought.

It sounds like you have been through a lot and it's great that you are doing what you think is best for your health. You will always find support here!

BEST of luck!

Welcome Paula,
I am pretty new on here too  but have enjoyed learinging as much as possible about the Lap Band.  After years of thinking and a little research I announced I was going to pursue this as well.  Most everyone that matters in my life is very supportive as I have struggled with my weight and always seem to end up in the same place.  Once I made my mind up I have pushed to get everything done in the 3 month window that my insurance required since I don't have a 40 BMI.  I would agree that if you doctor thinks the LAP will help with your other co-morbidity issues it is worth it.  When you learn all that you need to do to be successful with the band or with gastric it isn't really the easy way out.  Some of my friends thought I was capable of losing on my own but I thought I had proved ovver the last 20 years that wasn't really the case.  Good luck though your pursuit.  I look forward to seeing your progress.
I have mine put on June 2nd:-)
