lap band vs Sleeve

Dumping in EITHER surgery is a case by case and person by person basis.  "MANY" Sleevers no more dump FOREVER as do RnYers.  So please give FACTS when clarifying a surgery you don't have.

I am actually glad I dump.  I can avoid dumping by not eating crap I shouldn't be eating anyway.  When I had my band there was nothing I could do to avoid the sickness I felt 24/7 except have that thing removed.

Phyllis, I have talked to a friend in REAL LIFE who has the Sleeve who dumps and MANY on the Sleeve board mentioned that they also dump, it was something that they was not aware of when they got their surgery...........ALSO if you read closely Phyllis in this THREAD mentioned that she dumps and no longer can tolerate some sweets or certain carbs, some people are ok with this and some are not. Maybe you should read the Sleeve and Main boards a bit more carefully.

Okay,  I was being RESPECTFUL to you Naomi as I have always tried to be. I was not challenging you on your band experience because I do not have a band !!

I was sharing my experience as a  three year sleeved patient !!!  I can see you are agitated so I will let it go.

As for me reading the boards dear, I have been reading
diligently for SEVEN YEARS !!

I agree with what you're saying!  My BMI was over 60 and my insurance refused to pay for the LapBand, saying the same that I would never lose the weight!  They insisted I get RNY.  I asked exactly why they would make that statement!  The rep told me exactly what you said, they feel if someone allows themselves to get as obese as I was - that I would not be disciplined enough to make the band work.  She said I was a food addict and the LapBand doesn't work for food addicts who have allowed themselves to be morbidly obese.

I showed them!!!

Today, I went to my LapBand doc's office and my picture was posted on their wall!  I sat down and one of the ladies in the office recognized it was me!  I felt famous!  I felt good!  I do love my LapBand.  Three years later - it's still working for me!  AND I'm working for it!  It's adjustable and I control how tight it is!

I'm going in 10 days for the second phase of my plastic surgery!

I lost 100lbs in my first 7 months.  A little more than 2 years out I'm down 200lbs.

Statistics say that most will lose an average of 50lbs with the band.  I've always figured that I'm not a statistic, I'm an individual.  I have no idea why a dietician would tell you that it "wouldn't work for you".  Ask her.

The band is (usually) a slower weight loss and requires more work.  But it was the only one that I was willing to consider with my other health issues.  Research and make sure the band is what you want because many insurances are now going to one WLS per patient.

I lost 100 with with lovely band :)

Getting the remaning 40 pounds hasn't been easy but I wouldn't of choose any other method of surgery.. but I'm not aiming for 150 pounds size 6/8 body.. I'm aiming for a size 14 NOT PLUS approx 180 pounds... I have been heavy since I was 6 .. in jr high after Jenny Craig I weighted 175 .. in my twentys I wore a size 28 at one point..

So my goals are different than some .. you need to sit yourself down and really ask yourself what you want out of WLS because of all our journeys are different. I know some WANT to be a size 4 some start Lap band at 210 pounds and some of us start at 310 or 410.. so you will get a variety of answers but you really need to look at yourself and your lifestyle to know which WLS fits YOU the best.

While there are some very successful people here, there are also many of us who have had little or no success. I recently learned from my surgeons office that about 20% of band patients have trouble ever getting correct restriction and end up having to revise or just live with it way it is. It is without a doubt the most difficult surgery to succeed with. It takes months to actually get any restriction, lots of hard work and discipline. Even when you follow the rules to a T you can be one of that 20% but won't know until it is actually in you. My personal opinion is if you can get another type of surgery, say the sleeve, you would be better off. Mind you I am one of that 20% so I'm pretty biased but in the long run the choice is yours, just be prepared and study up on all 4 types of surgery to be well informed.

I can only speak from my experience, all of my issues have been mechanical in nature.  With the Sleeve surgery you get all the benefits of the LapBand without the potential for mechanical complications.  You also wake up with immediate, non fluctuating restriction and the after care isn't as extensive since there isn't a 'device' in place.

Sure there are those that have lost well with the band, but if you visit the revision, failed band, and regrets board you will see that the band might not be the best option out there.

Good luck.
