To those who are afraid to attempt 5K's.. let me offer some encouragement.  I don't run the whole time.. I run some and walk some.  Each time I try, I get a little bit faster.  :)

Crossing the finish line yesterday at a 5K race.  40 minutes to walk/run 3.2 miles, according to my watch. Awaiting official time.  About 181 lbs.

After a race in March 2011.  I'm in purple.  About 192 lbs or so ( I don't have a recorded weight for that time, but in Feb, I weighed 196 & April I was 188.. so taking an average.  This race was a 2miler which I did in about 27 minutes I think.  The week before I did a 5K (no pictures ) which I completed in 46 minutes.

October 2010, working at my church's Pumpkin Patch.  Weight in October was about 220.  Later that month I did my first 5K.. WALKING only.  :)   57 minutes.

That is AWESOME!! What an accomplishment. I did my first 5K back in December 2010. My time was 47:10. I walked some & ran some too. I didn't feel out of place either b/c there were alot of people doing that.
For some reason I can walk faster than I can run. I can walk at 4.5 & maintain w/in my heart rate range but if I run at that speed it goes up to almost 100%, too far over the 85% I should be. Therefore I slow my speed just so I can run, if that makes any sense.

I love the feeling after I wogg (walk/jog). I guess b/c at 261 lb I never though I would do anything like that.

You are doing great & look amazing. Keep it up!
Highest weight - 261/ Current weight- 186.4/ Goal weight- 155

Lisa, you really got me thinking about a 5K yesterday.  I ran ( jogged slowly ) another mile yesterday and DH went with me.  He hasn't done a mile since Jr. High, so we were both huffing and puffing towards the end.  A real runner went by us and I pointed at us and said "BEGINNERS! hahaha  It put a smile on the runners face.
I improved my time by 30 seconds, so it was 10:45

I think 40 minutes is excellent for a 5K!  Congrats!

And Wow, look at how great you look finishing your 5K!

I do need to find appropriate capri's to wear for jogging.  I am wearing stretch jean capri's. hahaha

Thanks for the encouragement you have given me!

Way to go Lisa! I haven't done my first timed competitive 5K, but I do jog/walk 5k's on the treadmill and at our park! I just haven't go the nerve to do it with others as of yet!

I just got back from the park after a run/walk. It was too darn hot out there so only ran about 15 minutes straight and walked the other 15.

Kristie~get some driweave pants at WalMart. The are usually about $11. I love mine. I have capri ones and long ones. And make sure you have good running shoes. I just got new new ones from the New Balance store. I brought in my old shoes so they could check the wear and tear and check my stride. Then they had a machine were they put my foot on it and analyzed if I needed support or cushion! I got a pair that feels like I'm walking/running on a cloud. They were about $120, but well worth it. If you don't have the right shoes it can cause knee, hip and back pain.

Good luck and happy running!

Thanks for the suggestions Pam.  I wrote your info down and will get more appropriate running gear!  I have been walking 5-7 hours a week, so I don't have running shoes.  Thanks!  : )

Good for you for getting out there and doing those 5ks! I was running a lot more last fall, but took a break over the snowy miserable winter. I signed up for a 5k on Memorial Day but haven't done much training yet. Your post is great inspiration to get back at it!
