no ensure, try the special k protein drinks or adkins, or make your own go to the health food store and get some whey protein, ask for one with 100 cal, and around 20 grams of protein.

Whoa...I'm really shocked that your Dr. has not given you a specific diet to follow with a list of approved liquids.  You need to call them first thing on Monday for more direction.

But, at the very least you should be using a good quality whey protein shake.  Ensure probably does not have enought protein, but I'm not sure becuase I never used it.  I would aim for a minimum of 20 g of protein per serving.  The protein is really important because while you're on liquids this is your only source of protein and you should be aiming for 60-80 g per day.  The protein will also help the most with hunger.

My surgeon had me do liquids for 3 weeks post op.  3 protein shakes per day.  I was able to fill in with other zero calorie or under 50 calorie beverages.  I could also have SF jello, and SF popsicles.  I drank water, unsweetened ice tea, broth, stock, 25 calorie hot chocolate, diet Ocean Spray juice, Crystal light, zero calorie, (non-carbonated) flavored water, etc.  No soda with the band.

I also really enjoyed wonton-soup broth, (no wontons or veggies, just the broth).  Any Chinese restaurant should be willing to sell you broth only.

For me it was key to ALWAY have a beverage in hand.  Remember, sip slowly and don't use a straw.

I hope you gett better diet progression info from your surgeon soon!  It's unacceptible to me that they sent you home without a clear understanding of where you will get your nutrients!

Best~

If Ensure is what I am thinking it is, I don't think any bariatric patient should be on it. It is super high calorie supplement for people who undernourished, like those with AN or cancer cachexia.

Your surgeon didn't tell you what to eat? Aren't you having protein shakes?

I would say Ensure is a bad choice for you.  It is high calorie as the other poster said.  I'd call your doctor on Monday and ask him for specific instructions.

For the first week, my doc had me on clear liquids only.  it wasn't until the second week that i could add in protein drinks, and then only ones mixed with water.  After two weeks, i could have protein with skim milk.  Ensure was never an option, only high protein supplements.

Call your doctor today if you need to.  It may irritate him or her, but really they should've made sure you had better post-op instructions.

I didn't do protein drinks post-op but maybe once or twice.  Didn't like them and decided I'd rather do soup.  I lived on campbells soup diluted with water or chicken broth and whirled in the blender, but my doctor progresses his patients a little faster than some other doctors.  Or at least he did 2 years ago.  :)

If you're having difficulty, call.

My doc says specifically not to use Ensure. It doesnt have the recommends in it. It has to high cal/carb count to the amount of protein you get. All your protein shakes should have above 20g. Higher the better. And carbs should be less than half the protein in the shake. I use Isopure powder- 50g carb, and 0g carbs. Before I used that I used Muscle mike lite, or Oh Yeah, which is found at GNC. Tastes great and has what you need. I was drinking a protein shake the night of the surgery. Idk why you are 3 days out and have not!
