I like the Costco brand Vita Rain for flavored water.  Zero calories and about $14 for 24 bottles.  I also like the Zero Vitamin water, (buy them when they're on sale), the orange is my favorite.

Ocean Spray now has Diet juices.  They are zero calories, I think, cranberry pomegranite, etc.

I have heard in a couple places that the reason beverages with caffeine don't count is that they dehydrate you. It actually takes more water to process these beverages than wha****er is in them. I hope that makes sense. K

You are exactly right, Shellqueen.  And here's what answer.com says about it:

"Does Caffeine dehydrate you?

Answer:
it is a Diuretic which means that it causes your body to loose water, because it takes more water for your system to process it through the kidneys. Other diuretic drink are soft drinks and tea.

Caffeine is a diuretic but the most recent studies have shown that although caffeine causes a mild diuresis, it is similar to that of water. “In the 10 studies reviewed, consumption of a caffeinated beverage resulted in 0 to 84 percent retention of the initial volume ingested, whereas consumption of water resulted in 0 to 81 percent retention." Additionally, regular consumption of caffeine reduces the diuretic effect unless consumed in large quantities (500-600 mg/day).

Of course, this opposes what we have heard for decades and what many will continue to repeat."

I knew it was a Diuretic so that is why I drink it especially when I'm retaining water to see if it helps me go to the bathroom more and it dont .

It's just like water I dont pee alot when I drin**** Tea I never have from drinking it . Wi**** would though because I hate retaining this water waiting for my period to start jeesh lol

I disagree that caffeine is dehydrating when consumed in reasonable amounts.   Apparently Mayo clinic agrees.

My surgeon says he will not tell anyone they can't have their tea or coffee.  He does want us to be aware of what we put in the drinks (ie, sugars, cream, etc.).

I drink 2 big cups of coffee every morning.. extra caffeinated aamof.. and am doing well.  I drink water & crystal light the rest of the day.  Occasionally I'll have coffee in the afternoon too, but that's rare, maybe every 2 weeks?  If I want something warm, I usually make herbal tea.

Everyone has to do what is right for them.  I just wanted to present another viewpoint.  :)

Hi Lisa... I think the website I quoted said pretty much the same thing as what you just said..."when consumed in reasonable amounts".   Your two cups (maybe three) falls with that 4 to 7 cups that Mayo recommends as a reasonable amount.  Answers.com just said it in a different way (500-600mg).

I cut out the caffeine because I was drinking a whole pitcher or more a day. (as well as the diet sodas I used to drink)  Moderation seems again to be the key :)

My fault, I didn't read your linked pages.

My only excuse is that today has not been a great day.  I was awoken at 2am this morning by my husband with the news that our neighbor's house was on fire and he needed me to help find their phone number.  Fortunately the neighbor is a nail tech and I had her number in my cell.

Luckily they were out of town.  By the time we found the fire, it was so far gone, no one would've survived.  The house is a complete and total loss.

I probably shouldn't be posting at all.

Oh Lisa I was just trying to clarify we were saying sorta the same thing...wasn't trying to chastise you in any way.  You are among friends here...Wish there was something I could say to help. Thats so sad about your neighbor's house.  We lost alot of things in a flood once...momentos you can never get back. but then again, they were  just things.   Thank god no one was hurt.

OH how awful to have a fire like that so close to you! I feel bad for them. What a tragedy to come home to! K
