Banded in 2 days...
Okay, well I have my surgery scheduled for this Tuesday, May 3rd. Should I be nervous yet? I'm not at all. But I've also never been under the knife for anything. I feel like I should be but I'm just not. My mom, aunt, dad, and grandma are more nervous for me that i seem to be. Why? Is it becuase im young? 15 to be exact? I havent been nervous yet. I don't know. Please help.
(Please don't anyone say something about me being to young. That's the last thing I need)
Thanks in advance!
~Karissa
My nerves didn't really kick in till the night before my surgery and then I got nervous and scared to the point I wanted to call the whole thing off, or if I was doing the right thing , or if I should give it another shot of trying since I was successful before losing weight without WLS.
My husband was more worried for me also lol. I wasn't really scared of the surgery part of it , I was more scared of the IV to be honest lol. I had a very bad experience with nurses and IV's when I had my son so people giving me shots is not on my high list of trusting people :o)
tell your family its a easy surgery :o) I had my surgery at 1pm back to my room at 3 pm and was home at 7 pm that night.
I did so well they let me go home instead of spending the night . Remember when you get back to your room get your booty out of bed and start walking. When you get tired of walking keep walking.
I walked from 3:15 pm to 7 pm that night. I would walk for a good 20 min then sit in my chair do not get back in bed for 10 min and back up to walking again.
You are young which is really good in your favor , you will bounce back alot faster then us older folks did and you wont nearly have the skin problems like we will .
Use this lap band for all its worth I hate to see any young kid go through weight problems that is why I'm so very very strict with my son so he dont end up like me and cant enjoy the teenage yrs cause of weight problems.
Good luck !!!

Karissa,
Congrats to you on your upcoming band date. I know how you are feeling at this moment I was banded last Tuesday. I was not nervous for the most part, just excited to begin my journey (second chance more like it). Was so excited in fact I could barely sleep. Its natural and a good sign that your family is more nervous than you are that is a sign that they care and that they are also supportive of your decision.
I wish you all the best and much success. Please email me after your sugery when you have the opportunity and let me know how everything went. Best Wishes. I'm happy for you.

Surgery kind of sucks when you first wake up, but then again you are groggy and you go back to sleep pretty quickly. When they wheel you into the room to put the mask on it is a matter of seconds before you are OUT and then wake up. For the most part you will be sleeping most of the first day. They give you pain meds while you are in the hospital and that keeps things at bay, it doesn't completely remove the pain, but it keeps it tolerable to where it just kind of sucks. If you feel it wearing off don't be afraid to tell someone.
The part where they are getting you ready for surgery is a bit scary. It can be a bit nerve racking but just remember that they do this quite a bit and it just all looks bad. For me the worst part is when they put in the IV (needle). These days they are usually deadening the site before they put it in. Once it is in, there is no problem.
I'll let someone who is happy with the Lap-Band talk about it. Trust me I am sitting on my hands when it comes to wanting to warn you about the complications that CAN happen with the Lap-Band. I'll just tell you to communicate well with how it is making you feel and what your experiences are with your Doctor. I am sure because of your age He/She will be watching you closely, if not then you chose the wrong doctor. I would suggest that you be very conservative with your fills. Tiny fills spread over a long time with tons of time in-between to learn how to eat at that level. Follow the advice you get for living with the band closely.
I wish you luck and success.

I've maintained my weight loss for over one year now!
Good luck this week! You will do great. I was ready to dart out of the hospital and I was getting checked in. And then I just got giddy. Thats how my nerves work I guess. It may hit you at some point, but take advantage of not being nervous. Do what you can to focus and be prepared.
As for being young, as long as this is a well thought out decision with the input of medical professionals, which I'm sure it is, you'll be so happy to get your weight issues under control earlier rather than later. I did it in december before I turned 30. because I didn't want my 30's to be dominated by my weight like my teens and 20s were. Good luck!
Oh, bring your ipod to the hospital. If you do get nervous, it may help to block out the environment.

I was 16 when I had my first lap band so age is not the concern.. if anything it will HELP! I healed SOO quickly because of my youth. Your family is nervous because they are your FAMILY... they had to give my mom a valium because she was freaking out lol that's just what families do. Good for you taking charge of your life Karissa! Use the band as a TOOL. Please don't abuse it or use it as an excuse to make poor decisions. You sound mature for your age BUT that does not mean your friends are... don't let them pull you in the wrong direction!! Stand on your own two feel and stand strong. No matter what they say you are doing something that none of them have the balls to do at 15 and that's take life into your own hands!
If you EVER want to talk about surgery or vent please please let me know! I look forward to seeing your progress!
BEST of luck!!
