acid reflux
I have not experienced acid reflux but from what my doctor and fellow banders on this site. I would say that if you are eating right before bed and laying down that could be the problem but if you are allowing time between your last meal and bedtime then I would say that you are to tight. If it was me I would call my dr.'s office and see if I needed a bit of an unfill. I hope this helps.

I have had reflux twice both times I had to have a slight unfil .1-.5 It stopped right away. When it started my doc had me on an acid blocker 2x daily I stayed on it for about 2 weeks. but did not want to keep taking medication so had the unfil . I would call your doc and see what he/she suggest

I have not experienced this, but I have read continually and often that acid reflux, specifically in the evening and/or middle of the night, can be a sure sign of your band being too tight. I would look into getting a *slight* unfill possibly. You definitely need to take care of it though before it escalates to something more serious that could require a *complete* unfill. Good luck! :)
I agree.
If your stoma is producing acid it can either go up or down. If "down" is too tight then as soon as your body relaxes it shoots up. I wake up choking and coughing on acid. It doesn't even matter if I am sleeping in a chair or not, it's going up.
Mind you, my band is slipped and I go through periods where it is tighter than it should be. I wish I could just "unfill" but it's already empty.

After two weeks on regular food, I started reflux really bad again. It had been gone after the surgery for about six weeks. Saw doctor, he removed 1cc. Problem didn't get much better. Already taking 20mg Aciphex twice daily. Friend recommeded a tablespoon of olive oil sprinkled with lemon juice daily until better. Surprisely it really helped. Started being more careful about not eating or drinking for at least one hour before going to bed or napping. That helped too, but still struggling. I am not nearly loving my band yet. Have lost about 30 pounds in three months.
The only times I have experience acid reflus since getting banded was a sympton my band was too tight and I went in the next day and had very small unfills. It made all the difference. I do not like waking up in the middle of the night choking and unable to breathe. Too scary. I would call your surgeon and ask him about having a slight unfill.
Good luck!

The longer the reflux continues and the further out you are, the less likely you are going to get any relief no matter what you do. Reflux is a bad sign for future problems and there really isn't much you can do about it as long as you have a band. Even if it goes away or gets better temporarily, it will come back and all the while it is damaging your esophagus.
Drinking lots of water before you go to bed might help.

I just started having acid reflux after my last fill. I hadn't lost any weight for about 6 months, so I really needed a fill. However almost right away I began waking up at night choking and coughting, I could actually feel my mouth filling up with fluid and would have to frequently swallow. YUCK! After describng the problem to the nurse at the bariactric clinic I attend, was told this is quite common, and as long as I was eating my food ok, and not throwing up, a medication should solve the problem. I was given a prescription of Pantoprazole Magnesium, ( Tecta) 40 mg. This has solved the problem as long as I dont eat or drink after 7 or 8pm. I am now losing weight and hope that as I continue to lose that the band will ease up and not be as tight. Living with the band has its challenges indeed.
