Hello everyone,

I am new to this community. I live in the Houston Area and looking to get Lap Band surgery done.  I was wondering how successful the lap band is.

Thank You,
Bette B.

Well that's the big question!!! For some it works very well and many here have lost 100's of lbs., for others like myself it was a total waste of time. My weight gain came from not being able to exercise because of a lung disease, I already ate good quality food in moderate amounts so having the band really made no difference. Besides that I could never get a good restriction level, I was always either too tight or too loose. In speaking with a surgeon recently she said they are finding that 20% or so of people have that same issue of not being able to get restriction and they are encouraging getting the VSG instead because it doesn't have so many problems. I think and this is just my opinion that if you are a volume eater you have a pretty good chance of the band working but for anyone else I doubt it will do alot of good.

I have been very successful --- I think that patient readiness and compliance are the most important factors to success.

Make sure you research all 4 WLS ----- and get yourself ready to work hard.

Pick a surgery (after you do your research) and then pick a surgeon ---- if a pick a surgeon first, they will probably steer you towards a surgery that they perform.

For me, it has been VERY SUCCESSFUL!  I am 27 lbs under my goal weight and have been maintaining for 15 months now. :)

Well, I wouldn't call the lapband successful, I'd say that I'm a success with the lapband.  :)

Started at 385 at seminar, 383 day of surgery.  Today, a little more than 2 years later, I'm 187 this morning.   Still obese according to BMI charts, but only 7 or so lbs away from only being overweight.  I will get there.
