Protein

I asked this question over on the Realize forum, but can see that you guys are a lot more active. Thanks to some help over there,  I have greatly increased my protein intake. I've bought some small quantities of protein powder at the grocery store and got some samples from a mail-order place, but want to buy a larger quantity. However, I don't want to pay big bucks for a huge container of something I don't like or that doesn't dissolve well. Any suggestions for a good-tasting, easy-dissolving, low-calorie, high-protein powder or other form? (I know there's probably nothing that fits all those things and isn't TOO expensive, but a girl can ask, can't she?)

Thanks in advance.

I get my protein powder from GNC, specifically the AMP brand.  I like the chocolate and vanilla flavors and mix them with frozen berries.  I don't remember the nutritional information, but this is what I found when I googled it:

Common serving units
2   scoops   5 40 1 187
1   scoop   2 20 0 93
2-1/2   scoops   6 50 1 233

Also, GNC offers different sizes, so you don't have to shell out major bucks to try it out, and they also do specials often, like buy one get one half off or free.

Hope this helps.

My doctor wants his patients to get their protein from real food.

But, there are times when liquid protein is helpful.

I like syntrax nectars.  Come in various fruit flavors, 90 to 100 calories/scoop (a scoop is about 1/2 cup) mixes well, 0 carbs, 23 grams protein.

You can go to the syntrax site (www.si03.com) and email and ask about samples.  They don't give them away for free. but they will sell you a variety of samples for 1.00 each.. and shipping is usually free.

Once you try the syntrax and if you decide you want to buy some.. the best place I've found (so far) to buy from is Netrition.com     They carry tons of products and flat rate shipping o****

Sorry, it jacked up my chart.  Should read:

2 schoops offers 5 carbs, 40 protein, 1 fat, 187 calories
1 scoop is 2 carbs, 20 protein, o fat and 93 calories
2 1/2 scoop is 6 carbs, 50 protein, 1 fat and 233 calories

GNC has a bag of Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 in the 1.22 lb size.  I bought the vanilla and chocolate and LOVED the chocolate.  Don't know if TX has GNC's everywhere like AR does, but thought it might. I thought it was reasonable comparatively, and you don't have to buy a barrel.  The vanilla is OK too, I'm just a chocoholic.  Good Luck!

The AMP brand from GNC that the other poster mentioned is actually on sale at Rite Aid this week for $23.99 for the little over 1 pound bag.  The big 3 pound container is $50.00, normally $60.  I bought a few different kinds of protein.  I have the Nectar products from Synthrax and I also have the Unjury unflavored protein.  I also bought the biggest loser chicks protein, Jillian something, but it is only 15 gms of protein per scoop, a little on the low side.  You can get that much protein out of a container of Chobani.  I like the GNC AMP product the best.  If you add some sugar free Davinci flavoring syrup it might mask whatever taste might be unpleasant to you.

For pre- and post-op diets, I also used the AMP protein from GNC.  I mixed it with milk instead of water to add a little more protein and also to make it taste better.  I've since stopped using it because I am able to get all my protein from food but while I needed to use the shake, it was a great one.  It is on the expensive side compared to some of the other options but I think it was completely worth it.  It tasted better and had loads more protein than any of the others I tried.

I buy Jillian Whey Protein I like it 10 dollars at Walmart
100 calories both low in sugar and carbs and 15 grams of protein
our bodies can only process so much protein in one sitting so I would do anything over 30 if all your drinking is shakes.. but if you are eating and just incorporating a shake here and there then I suggest Jillian Whey

Unless we are pre or post op we should be getting our protein from real food and not rely on shakes.

I've always loved spirutein unsweetened vanilla. It is soy based. I love soymilk and tofu so it works for me. I can't stand whey bc I can smell the egg and taste the egg if that makes sense. Seems like people either love soy or hate it. Anyways it is the only kind I like. With ice, some soymilk and splenda. Very thick. YUM!!! I always you a hand blender or bullet to get the thick frosty milkshake consistency.

Wow! What great -- and quick -- answers!

I'm not much of a cook, and what seems to work best for me is a chocolate SlimFast in the morning with protein. I liked the Jillian Michaels product, but it is only 15 grams of protein. I've been using the EDS (I think that's what it is -- I don't  have it here at work), and it is 23 grams of protein and dissolves well and tastes good. I originally got a small sack at Ross Dress for Less on the sell-out table and liked it. I bought a small container the other day, and it was just a little more than the Jillian Michaels stuff, but it wasn't lasting very long. I found a 5-lb sack at Sam's for about $30. But some of the others I've seen -- that are more expensive -- have more protein.

Thanks to everyone, and I'll  keep watching this space in case somebody else chimes in.
