EGD for a food bolus.
A little history, I was banded in Jan 2009. Had my port replaced in aug 2009 and surgery to reposition the band after a slip in jan 2010. I was going to go through a revision this last winter, but insurance denied it due to noncoverage for revisions. I am in the process of refilling the band for the third time and have never really gotten adequate restriction. Gone through many fills and unfills. Some as small as 0.1. Last month I had a 0.5 fill and ended up with 0.3 unfill a couple of hours later because i couldn't keep water down. So I am very, very sensitive. Now for the current situation:
This last thursday, I ended up eating my lunch to fast and ended up having food get stuck. I was throwing up food over the next seven hours. I thought I had brought all the food up, so I tried to take sips of water and jello, but they also continued to come up. I quit trying about 10 at night and slept until about 2. I woke up and was up the rest of the night with upper abdominal and back pain. I waited until morning and went to the ER. They gave me CT of the stomach only to find that I had a food bolus. It was bolus from my lunch the previous afternoon. I was discharged from the ER and sent to the GI clinic and had an EGD. They were able to push the food bolus through the band opening to open things up. The back and abdominal pain was gone almost as soon as I woke up from the EGD, but still have a headache from the sedation. Just wondering if anybody has gone through where you couldn't get the food item up or down on your own. I had tried papaya enzymes also. Any help is appreciated.

I have basically been staying with soft food for the most part. Yesterday I had an egg bake and cottage cheese otherwise only liquids. Even have to take the egg bake and the cottage cheese very slow. Feel even tighter than I did before. I had a CT the other day and they said the band placement is ok. I see the bariatric PA on Tuesday. I talked to the bariatric nurse and not much to be done until then, but to be very careful with what I eat. I plan on having about 0.5 taken out and leave it be for a while and see where it takes me. The next step is a complete empty or removal. I live 2 hours away from the bariatric staff. I could go over on Monday, but when they are coming to my town on Tuesday, it seems pointless to drive that far.

You know, I had a slight unfill a week ago and thought I was going to have to have more out because I was so tight. But because I had been so tight for so long (their vacations and mine) I gave it a few more days and stuck to mushies and liquids. Now, I think it's gonna be OK, and I have a couple of weeks before my next appt. to make sure. And your situation was so very much more extreme than mine, maybe your insides just need a bit more time to settle. I'm certainly no authority, but can only speak from my experience. Please keep us posted. Bless you!
