I have a question for Maria, and others in the ANTI-BAND camp

Yeah I give especial thought to something I am considering when cutting into my body is involved.  Much success to YOU...by your definition...

"WLS is only for people who are ready to move past the "diet" mentality" ~Alison Brown
"WLS is not a Do-Over (repeat same mistakes = get a similar outcome.)  It is a Do-BETTER (make lifestyle changes you can continue forever.)" ~ Michele Vicara aka Eggface

That would depend on each person's definition of success...going into my banding surgery, I expected to lose between 40-70% of my EW (between 56 and 98 lb...that is still my expectation.
Some would define success as losing ALL EW (100%) which is not a reasonable expectation (based on the stats) for banding.
I am already a success...down 68 lbs, 4 sizes and feeling so much better than I did before banding.  It is the most successful "diet" I have ever been on.

Aren't "results" the point of having WLS?  Meeting the goal of being in a healthy BMI range?

Am I missing something?

So you are in the camp that would rather die than not be successful.  And that is fine.  But that is what the anti-band brigade is pushing.

Umm... Your question is extreme but I'll answer it my way.  You can "die" with any WLS.  Risks are maybe 1% higher with the others.  So would I rather take that 1 % risk? At this time in my life, yes.

I had a band for 3 years.  Lost a lot while it was in me; over 100 pounds.  Do I feel the band helped me?  No.  It was because I dieted and exercised while it was in me.  I was filled pretty tight too, but I was always capable of eating around the band.

So... I'm going on my 3rd WLS (my 2nd could not be completed due to complications from the band).  The band led me to 2 revisions and about 10g's out of pocket in co-pays.

I don't think the band is "wrong" or "bad".  I really don't.  I just think it's not for a LARGE percentage of people.  I wouldn't recommend it for people with more than 80 pounds to lose.

So I'm not Anti-Band.  I'm just not ignorant or scared anymore.

Yes, my example WAS extreme.  Very extreme.  But the anti-band pushers are arguing the opposite, which is equally as scary.

Omg! I can't believe you just said that. No the "anti-band brigage" is not pushing "rather die than not be successful", lol.

Why the hell would you equate that to have an effective WLS that you will die?!

Anything under 30 would be healthy for me...for you, maybe not???

For me, in my consideration of this journey.. the fact of the re-routing freaks me out.. but also the malabsorption.  I know that I could NOT handle that.  I see the issues people have and honestly.. I could handle those problems vs. the problems that can arise due to malabsorption.
Just had my RNY on 7.2.12!!!!  WOOHOO!!!!!

So I would wager that you knew this while making your WLS decision?
