What a night I had...

So this Thursday I will be 2 weeks post-op. Last night for dinner I tried a chicken breast, chopped into the smallest pieces I ever had, super moist, and some mashed potatoes. Needless to say, I didn't finish what I had on my plate. A few hours later I had some ice cream for dessert.

4am, I woke up in the most pain I have ever experienced in my life on my lower left side. Like if you put your hands on your hips, right there. I couldn't lay down, it hurt to stand up, I was doubled over in pain. I thought it was gas, so I sucked on 3 Gas-X strips. After about 30 minutes of pacing around my bedroom, I felt like I had to throw up. I started sliming, but eventually was heaving up thick yellow goo, with green spots (I'm assuming that was the gas-x). After that I was sick as a dog, had the chills, totally pale, and still in pain. I sat in the bathroom for a while, like an hour, and eventually the pain on my side went away.

I still have one lingering problem though -- it feels like someone is pushing on my bladder. I have so much pressure in that area, it feels like I have to pee all the time. It started last night when I woke up and has been there since.

I have no idea if the 2 are related, but it seems really weird. I initially thought that if I had reeeeeally bad gas pains, the bloat might be putting pressure on my bladder. But now that the gas pains have went away, shouldn't the pressure go away??

Has anyone else had a similar experience?? Needless to say, I am putting myself back on liquids today!

My first thought is bladder infection.  I got one 1 week after surgery, even though I have only had 1 once before in my life, 20 years previous.

I must admit though that I am surprised that you are eating chicken no matter how small and moist the pieces are only 2 weeks post op.  I can't help but wonder if that is also not a big part of the problem.

If if feels like you have to go to the bathroom constantly but only a dribble comes out and such you need to go get checked for a bladder infection.

That's a good point... it's just weird that it came on at the same time as this thing did last night?!

I can start to have purees during week 3. On the list is skinless chicken breast. I chopped it up real small and ate it on the same spoon as some mashed potatoes. Maybe it was pushing it, I dont know...

A friendly reminder, when experiencing the amount of pain you described above, please call your doctor.  Advise on here is just that advise.  You just went through a major surgery and the surgeon/nurses are all there to help you with any problems you seem to be having.  Even if you have done something wrong, no one should experience pain like you are stating.  Good communication with your dr will help them to identify if there are any issues or if if they need to advise you to change something you are doing.  I truely hope you feel better......

Honestly I even wonder if it was a stuck episode. You usually start having trouble right away if you are stuck . I am glad you are calling your Dr . something else may be going on altogether. I too wondered about the 2 wk out and eating chx of any kind thing. Even on mushies you have to start small and work up to meat. It should be ....well...mush lol . So if you are going to eat that this early drag the old blender out and grind it up . Don't want to risk anything. My mushies did not include meat just yet at 2 weeks. Good luck and keep us posted !  :)

I'm 7 weeks post op, and still afraid to do chicken breast.  And I can't do mashed potatoes at all - they seem to expand and make me feel terrible.  The pain you described sounds like what I went through with a kidney stone a few years ago.  I'm glad you called your doc - keep us posted!

Wait...

You said you're almost 2 weeks out. Then you said in week 3 you can have pureed food.

So why would you be eating chicken breast NOW?

Regardless, you should see a doctor about the pain. But you should also revisit your surgeon's instructions and follow them.

You can't go back and make a brand new start, but you can start from now and make a brand new end.
