Anyone concerned with calories?

I had surgery one week ago today and I went for my post-op visit this morning. They gave me a new diet to start as of today. Three meals a day consisting of 1/2 cup of food at each meal. I can have canned tuna or chicken with low fat mayo, any canned veg tables, any canned fruit even baked potato with low fat sour cream. It just seems like so few calories, any advice?

In three weeks I have lost 16 pounds so I am thrilled just concerned about the low calories.

In between those meals, are you having a protein shake (or 2).

You can increase your calories and protein intake by adding a shake at some point --- or 1/2 a shake in the mid-morning and another 1/2 shake in the mid-afternoon

Just follow your six week post op and dont worry to much about calories at this point.

Once you get past your six weeks then that is when I started to play around with my calories.

I was keeping mine around 900-1000  a day but that is just to low of me so I have to have between 1200 to 1500 per day but that is with alot of Zumba included also.

For now follow your docs orders you are healing right now . During my post op I was lucky to get 900 in a day usually I was around 800 per day .

Advice - as the poster above me said at this point you need to worry about following your post up guidelines. Make sure you get your protein & your water in. Everything else comes in time & moderation. This is the band... relax a little and allow yourself to heal properly. While you're waiting for the physical aspects of your band to kick in - have you worked on any emotional, compulsive, or other eating habits that in the past you've ignored? Post op time is a great time to sink in a lot of reading information that can really benefit you. If you don't mind a suggestion, please read Geneen Roth's "When Food Is Love". She to use to struggle with food problems & be obese for most of her life. Now she's a motivational writer & speaker & maintains a healthy weight & eating life style. In August of this year I'll be 6 yrs out on my band, and during a really horrible emotional time in my life I resorted to some crazy horrible eating habits...and then lied about it to myself, friends, doctors, whoever for a year. I gained 40 lbs. Dialated my esaphoagus with nearly 3 months of packed food. My doctor ordered my band emptied and I got into therapy..but it wasn't until I read that book by Geneen Roth that I got "it" in my head. Life is so much easier. Eating is so much easier. And I'm 8 lbs away from taking off that 40 I gained. So please, please, please, if you have any type of food issue - take the time while in post op to work on it.

BTW - Geneen also writes other great books like "Women God Food" "When You Eat at the Refrigerator, Pull Up a Chair" and another favorite of mine "The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It". She even has a workbook to "Why Weight? Ending Compulsive Eating"... which I like because I can go back and any time and work sections over and over at any time I find myself slipping into bad habits.

Sorry I rambled. I hope my information is helpful.

When I had my surgery 2 years ago my Nuts protocol was 3 meals a day, 800 calories and 60-80 g of protein.

There is no consistency whatsoever in regard to post op diet progression so I always recommend following your care providers instructions.  I count calories and measure portions but the most important thing IMO to track is your protein intake.  Your body needs it for energy, strength, etc.  Plus, protein keeps you fuller, longer.

It seems like the average calorie intake on this forum is 1200 a day.

Best~

Thank you all so much for responding, your advice has put me at ease. I am heading to Borders after work to pick up some new reading material!
Thanks again!
