OT: Raise your hand for Planned Parenthood
Hey I saw my friends on Facebook with this status and I thought of this thread...
Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in TARP money, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes? Yeah, me neither.

Even though I never needed them I always knew they were there. I am pro-choice (you have the choice to not have an abortion but not to tell me what I can choose), I am an atheist. I am a woman. I am a Democrat. I was raised on welfare but know the meaning of a dollar. If we cannot help some of our weakest and most-trodden upon members of society (that would be women, the poor, and the young), we are nothing. If it wasn't for "goverment hand-outs" I would not be here.

I've never needed their services, but my hand is raised. I already shared the link on FB when I saw this pop up in the VSG forum too.
I'd prefer to see corporate tax loopholes closed and defense spending cut before taking money away from a program that saves lives. Abortions aside (no federal dollars), you can't tell me that pap smears and mammograms don't prevent unecessary deaths. People without insurance or the financial means to go for check ups would never know their lives were on the line if not for PP. We can throw billions down the drain to kill people in our quest for oil, but god forbid anyone try to fix our health care system or keep funding for an organization like PP... then all hell breaks loose (on the GOP side, anyway).
As far as the abortion debate goes, I'm pro-choice, but don't agree with abortions after a certain point. I think the cut off should be at the same point where you can no longer freeze an embryo. In in my mind, if you can freeze it, it's not a person yet... it's a bundle of cells that has the potential to become a person... you can't freeze a baby. Once that line has been crossed and you can no longer freeze it, then I think that's the line in the sand where abortion should no longer be an option.
Just my .02... not trying to start anything, just sharing my perspective.

Both my hands are in the ar and I am jumping up and down.
And now I'm going to tell you why I love Planned Parenthood so very much.
When I was a teenager, I was very violently date raped. I reported it to the police where I was made to feel like a criminal. I went to my OB/GYN where I was made to feel like it was my fault. I talked to my parents about it where I was made to feel like a helpless victim. I went to Planned Parenthood where I was made to feel like a surivior, like a woman, like a human being and most of all, like someone who was not alone.
When I found out that I was pregnant as a result of that rape, I went to Planned Parenthood again. Nobody told me what I needed to do. Nobody pushed me one way or another. The abortion that I CHOSE to have and that I paid for myself with no government funding or money was my decision and it is one that I have never once in my life regretted. And I never felt judged for making that decision.
But over the course of several months, I spent a lot of time at PP and what I saw where women who were being treated with respect and dignity regardless of their economic situation. I saw mothers taking their daughter for their first gynecological exams, I saw young girls, not much younger than I was being taught to be responsible, to care for themselves and to value their reporductive health. Women being educated on the importance of reproductive health and cancer and STD screenings. I saw people committed to educating and preparing young men and women for the decisions that they would be making, not hiding their heads in holes in the sand of "abstinence-only" education.
So yes. I jump up and down and raise both my hands for Planned Parenthood.
