Band over Bypass

I had RNY in December 2004 and lost 100 pounds within six months. I haven't dropped a pound since. I've maintained my weight loss, but I'm still 40 pounds over weight and I need help taking it off. Has anyone had success or failure with band over bypass? I'd like to hear the good, the bad and the ugly. Please advise. Thank you!

I haven't had band over bypass, but several members who are active on this forum are 'BOB' patients, so I'm hoping they'll respond to your question. One of them is Lisa BeeZee, and she's been very successful with her band.

One of my friends had the band over his bypass and did exceptionally well, but lately has had some problems with his band. But overall, I have heard success stories out there.

2019: 11 years out and maintaining a loss of 150lbs.

Me me ME (thanks Jean)!  I had a band-over-bypass in May 2009, lost to 25+ lbs UNDER my goal and have maintained there for about 15 months now.  I LOVE MY BAND and thankfully have had zero problems thus far.  I am leaving for the day so this is short but I wanted to respond to you before I left. Please feel free to send me a personal message if you have specific questions an/or you can also read my blog which is pretty detailed about my journey.  I'm here for you!

What does that mean?  Did you have your bypass reversed?  or do you still have the bypass and put a band over it?

yes, the bypass is left as is and a band is placed over the stomach.

This is my understanding, I'm not a physician and not an expert on RNY by any means.

Band over bypass is sometimes abbreviated as BOB.

Yes you are correct...the RNY is left in tact and a band is placed over your pouch. :)

Hi Lisa, quick question for you. I also had my RNY in San Diego in 2004 but had some pretty bad complications. I am just starting to research this and feeling guilty and selfish as hell even thinking about after everything I put my family through. I have gained about 25 lbs back and looks like they are just creeping back.

So my question is, did you have you BOB in San Diego and who did it? Also how did you get approved for it? Did you go through insurance. (I have Kaiser). Can you give a little more detail on the process and how it all worked?

I really appreciate your help. :-)

Hi Amy!  :)  I am self-employed and did not have medical insurance, so I was a self-pay.  As such, after a crazy amount of research and interviewing, I found a fabulous surgeon in Mexico to do my band-over-bypass surgery.   However, there are people here on the forum I know that did in fact have their insurance pay for the procedure (not sure if it was Kaiser though - I am pretty certain they will make you do a 6-month supervised diet before consideration of the revision, but you will have to just call and ask their policies about WLS).  Hope that helps!  Any other questions that you have about the procedure itself, let me know or feel free to read my blogs. :)
