I told everyone at work but I work some really great people and now I have a huge group of cheerleaders.  And yes they do ask me all of the time how much I lost but only to share in my joy of becoming thinner and healthier.

But I can understand not wanting people to know.  If I had it to do over again I might not have told everyone.  In the beginning I had a lot of trouble losing weight.  I felt like everyone was wondering why I'm not losing weight.  Thank God for exercise...it has been my savior.  I have lost more weight due to exercise than I can ever have imagined.  To me and my journey my weight loss has been 20% my band and 80% my sweat and determination...

Lap Band on 02/13/06 with
I told no one, not even my family.  I had lost weight over 50 pounds before and got the band when I started to gain the weight back so they just thought I was continue what I was doing before.  MsToya (I hope I have her name right) asked "If it was then why would you get the band in the first place?" I will answer that, no everyone have to have the band to lose weight, many myself included need it to keep the weight off that I lose.  What I find funny when someone is offended by a personal choice of another person.  And believe that because you had WLS that you owe someone something. I owe no one nothing but myself. it is truly your choice who you tell or what you tell.

I agree with you, it's not bending the truth at all. The band helps to keep you from over eating. I know that I can lose weight (which I have done many times before) I am getting the band to make sure that I don't "give up" if I physically can't break my diet, I will keep the wait off. Getting the band and not changing habits and not exercising will result in zero weight loss. If you get the band and do nothing else, the weight will go nowhere. However, diet and exercise, band or no band, will get rid of the weight. People close to me know but I choose not to share it with every person I come across because that's just my nature, I am personal about everything so most details of my life are on a need-to-know basis LOL. Just my 2 cents.

I didn't tell everyone - only those who I felt would be my support system.  In my job, I'm up in front of about 1000 ppl each week, so I've gotten a lot of questions and compliments.  When people ask me what I'm doing, I just tell them I saw a nutritionist and am doing a high protein, low carb diet, along with exercise.  Not one person has pursued it further.

It's really for you decide who you want to know, and if you don't want anyone to know, that's absolutely fine.  One of the reasons I chose the lap band is because I didn't want the weight to come off drastically.  I didn't want anyone to start thinking I was sick because I was losing so much weight.

I have come to the realization that for the most part, people are predominently focused on themselves anyway.

Welcome to the forum.  It's a great place to be!!!

I too am on the fence but it is mainly about telling my family.  As of right now my husband is the only one who knows and is extremely supportive.  Besides I tend to be private about things that people can use against me to try to hurt me.  My family is very judgemental and can be big on that.  As of right now, I will be using the nutritionist approach as to why i'm losing weight.  When I become more confiden in my success then I will be more willing to open up to them.  My advice to yo is open up to whom you see fit.  Not everyone is going to be supportive.  Since we will be going through a life altering process we will want as many positive people around us to help the changes roll smoothly.  Goodluck!

Ms Carter,

I too only told my husband, and regaring telling my family some will use it later against me as well.. so I have opted NOT to tell anyone other than my husband (for now)..

I am eating better, More protein, Less Carbs, and in a week I can FINALLY exercise (I am only 5 weeks out today from my surgery, but have lost 17.5 lbs).

As Jean says in her book, you tell whomever you want.. I just didn't want the drama from family and from work, so am doing it MY way.

Good luck and don't do anything you don't want to do.. this is your choice, your journey.. I am excited for you!!

All the best,

Country -v
