Not "Allowed" To Join "Band Grads Group".

I put in a request to join the Band Grads group, I have had my band 6 years!  I was sent a message saying I had to make my info public and not have a privacy setting.    A few years ago under a different ID I was  on this forum and my privacy was grossly violated on face  book and other forums by one who shall remain nameless, one of the more popular posters on this forum.  Needles to say I stayed off of this sight for about  2 years because of this.  It was all very ugly.  So I thought I would let by gone's by by gone's and try again. If OH allows this privacy feature, why not the Band Grads?  On second thought why would I even want to be a part of this group?  Your opinion?

I dont like to make any of my info public knowledge as you can see I dont show where I live, and I dont put pictures up and I dont even have my docs name up becasue they google him and get a idea where I live .

It's hard to teach my son not to do these  things when I turn around and do them so it would not make a good example if I dont follow my own rules I put down.  I tell him all the time dont say where you live dont put pictures up because of security and safety reasons.

If I had to make my stuff public just to join some group no thanks I will pass . I dont think that is right at all IMO.

My security and personal safety is more important then some group but that is just how I feel about it though .

I don't blame you one bit.  I don't put much information out there. In this day and age it is not a good idea.

If they don't want you, we still do.  Long time bandsters are hard to come by.  Please give us all the wisdom you have gained in six years.  I defintely want to hear from you.

Welcome back!!!

WOW ....that sucks ! 6 years definitely puts you in the band grad dept n my book . In these days you cannot be too safe i would think they would recognize that  so privacy settings should not be an issue. :(

I asked this question on the board  for the MOD "Is there another way to join this group other than to make your profile public?" Please see the post that I pasted the link and perhaps you can help?

Maybe one of the 3 will answer or come to this board with an answer.

I dont think you should have to have your profile public but I know it has to be verify that you are who you say you are...A band grad.

I am part of the group because I read both board to see what other grad are going through because on there if as veteran I am having issues, I can post and not have to worry about someone sitting in the cut just waiting to bounce on it and say SEEE, I TOLD YOU IT WILL NOT WORK. When most of time, I jsut want to share and see if anyone else have gone through the same or feel the same.

There was another post like this this week and one of the MOD came and answer questions.

I think you can just make your profile public long enough for them to approve you and then turn it back to private.

Or Friend one of the mods and let your profile go to friends only and then after in the group, turn it back to private.

I know I had to make my profile visible.. and just put it back to friends only yesterday.  I forgot to change it.  LOL

But if you've had troubles in the past, I can understand being very cautious.

I post both on the Band Grads group and here, but I wasn't aware that there was this issue about the privacy setting.  I am sure it is something more technical than sinister, as trust me there is nothing secretive nor sinister happening over there.  In fact, most days that board is pretty quiet and low key, which is why those of us who have been around a while like it.

Contact one of the moderators and see if there is a way to get around this or if there is a quick opportunity to go public and then go private as others have mentioned, so you can join all of the excitement over there.

I was not able to apply for the privacy profile part.    I really like it here so not a problem whatsoever to me!

I'm not a member of the Band Grads group since I started a new account a few months ago, so I don't have a dog in this fight.  But, I gotta tell you that I was a member previously, and the whole reason it was started was because some people just want a safe place to talk with other longer-term bandsters without the drama mamas.  In order to make sure they know who they're dealing with, they want to check out the profile.  In my opinion, posting history would be a better way of verification, but honestly, who has time to go through old messages?  Some other people made some good suggestions (change setting to "Friends only", and/or make the change just long enough for verification.

But, trust me, this is not an effort to be some kind of exclusive club.  Just a "no trolls" club!  It's a great bunch of bandsters, and worth a little extra effort.  I'd re-join myself, but I don't have time right now to keep up with this board, let alone another one.
