Post Op Diet Questions

I am 5 days post op. I have followed the diet perfectly.  Here are the problems.

1.  Am I supposed to be able to get 64 oz of fluid down already?  I can hardly drink any.  I sip on drinks, but  I'm lucky to get 24 oz down in a day.

2.  I can only take half of a yougurt or pudding.

3.  All I can really eat is a small cup of broth or SF popsicles without feeling like I'm about to throw up.

According to the diet I should have been able to have a banana today, but the thought of it makes me want to throw up.

Do you all have any suggestions?

I think you should call your surgeon's office and ask their advice.  At 5 days, I could get in about 48 oz fluids + soups, yogurt, sf pudding etc without an issue.  Hope you feel better soon!

Im so sorry your are having these challenges.  My dr's plan was different from yours (it seems most on this mssg board have different Nut requirements)   I was only allowed fluids, and strained soups for the first 3 weeks.  My  first 3-4 days, I too had struggles meeting my fluid and protein goals.  My plan made us journal every ounce.  breaking it down into small goals made it more manageable.  Sometimes I felt like I had to force myself to drink and get protein in but  I knew I had t o in order to get better.    I SIPPED 2 oz. of protein shake at the top of each waking hour, then sipped 2 oz. clear fluids, and  every 15 minutes thereafter until I reached the top of the next hour and started over w. 2 oz of protein again and so on and so on. So basically you are in a perpetual state of sipping sipping sipping.  Crushed ice helped me alot too.   Around day 6, or 7, I was finally able to take in more fluids at a time, but it was a very gradual process.  As far as fluids that first week, my nut said to use basically anything that I liked just to get fluids into my body.  I used apple juice and grape juice diluted 50/50 w. water  Gatorade was a good standby too.  change it up so you don't get burned out w. just one flavor.  THe first week is tough, but I hope these suggestions will help you.  When the protein shakes left my tongue feeling "sticky", I brushed my teeth alot.  It helped me feel better and I hope these suggestions will help you too.  You will get through this and you may feel at times you are forcing yourself, but you can do it.

At 5 days post-op, I was lucky to get 32 ounces of fluid -- it was hard (I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the time of surgery - so may have had more swelling than others, I don't know).

Keep doing the best you can with the fluids ---- 1/2 a yogurt of pudding sounds about right --- your appetite should pick up in the next week.

Keep working to increase the amount of fluid you drink ---- aim for 6 - 8 ounces more each day.

My appetite came back at about 6 or 7 days post-op.

Hang in there!
