Sooo my surgery is Monday April 4 (rescheduled from this past Monday) and I must admit that I haven't lost any weight!  My doc only requires the liquid diet two days before surgery and a low fat diet one week before.  How much weight did you guys lose before your surgery and what tips or suggestions to help me prepare for this surgery being that it is only in a few days????

I had to do a 6 month pre op diet plan as a qualification for my insurance and I lost 34 lbs before surgery. I had my surgery on Dec 14th and I've lost 24 lbs since.

Everyone reacts different to the surgery and the post op diets given by our surgeons and nuts are different. One thing you can expect is gas... LOTS of it. Chewable gas x works great. Walking helps a lot even if it's just a couple of minutes around the house. And I found this out the hard way... DON'T drink from a straw because it makes the gas worse. Make sure you get your protein in because it will help you heal. The best protein drink I've found is Unjury Chocolate. Drink at least 64 ozs of water a day. I know it's hard at first but just sip all day if you have to. And the MOST important thing is to follow your Dr's instructions.

The only "bad" thing I experienced is the first few days I got a little upset and regretted having the surgery and kept second guessing everything. After coming on this site and reading other banders post I found that it's quite common. Of course I did get over it and I'm very happy with my band and I'd do it over again.

Good luck with your surgery and keep us posted. This site is a great source of support and encouragement.

My insurance required that I dieted for 6 months before they would approve the surgery. I worked with a dietician and lost 102 lbs. I followed a low fat diet and consumed an average of 1600-1800 calories a day. For someone of my sie weight comes off uicker in the beginning because there is more to lose. Logging my meals on OH was a huge tool for me. It helped me kee track of my calories, fat, etc. every day.

Thanks for the tip!  I am going to look into logging my meals although I am not much of a "record keeper"!

My insurance also required a Dr. supervised diet for 4 months before they would approve the surgery. During that four months, I lost about 16-18 pounds.

My Dr. did not require a liquid diet before surgery, except the fasting 12 hours prior to surgery. So I was somehwat of a bad boy. Once the inusrance was approved and the surgery scheduled, I had about a 2 week window where I wasn't on a "required" diet, and ended up eating everything in sight.

I took that as my opportunity to gorge myself on all my favoirte foods that made me obese to begin with. I gained 13 pounds back in 2 weeks. My surgeoun scolded me for it but also said he forgot to direct me to go on a low fat diet the week before surgery.

Anyway, don't take me as an example, but the moral of my story is, I lost weight prior to surgery and then gained it back agin before surgey and still had the surgery... I am sure this doesn't help you much but, as long as you are following your doctors orders, you should be fine.

I can relate with you totally!!! I have been eating everything in sight seems like.  I feel I must eat all of my "favorite" foods now before the surgery!  It also seems that still hasn't sunk in that I am having this surgery either.  I can't explain it.

I lost 0 lbs pre-op.  In fact, I gained steadily during my 6 months supervised "diet".  My metabolism was so screwed up during that time that I was desperate for something to stop the gaining.  Surgery was it for me.  I lost 20 lbs the first month.

I did not have a pre-op diet to follow (just had to stop eating by midnight the night before).

I did give up sweets about 8 weeks pre-op -- and started to eat like a 'bandster' --- I started to use a small plate, use child-sized utensils, stop drinking while I ate.

Those changes helped me to lost 18 pounds in the 6 weeks before surgery.
