Not drinking with meals?

I have a question. How many comply with not drinking liquids when eating? I must admit I have had to drink many times when eating because when I don't drink something my food gets stuck so bad it hurts. it feels like my food stops in my throat if I don't drink liquids to help it go down. Does anyone have similar experiences with this? And is no liquids during meals the key to the lapband working?

Danger zone! If you have to drink liquids to MAKE the food go down then, A) you are taking too big of bites B) you are eating too dry of food C) you are taking another bite of food prior to properly getting the first bite down.

What are you eating that is getting stuck? Most of my dense protein I have to marinate prior to cooking or eat in a sauce or dressing of some sort.

Remember that when you drink while eating, you are pushing the food not only thru your stoma, but out of your pouch meaning you will be hungry sooner and eat more that day!

I think I'm eating too fast. Looking at your list of what NOT to do, I see myself doing 2 of them. Thanks and I will definitely be more careful.

I never ever drink when I'm eating with my meals.  I stop 30 min before , during and I dont drink again till any where from 30-60 min after wards.  I follow that rule to a T .

If I eat something spicy I just get some sugar free candy like life savers and suck on one of them instead to get that taste out of my mouth.

If you are drinking that much during meals and you are getting stuck that much sounds to me like you need a unfill or you are taking to large of a bite.

If you are not taking big bites then you need to call your doc and get some fluid out .  I was told you should never feel like that or get stuck that many times if I do then call the doc and he will take fluid out .

If I drink with my meals the food wants to come back up . NO drinking with meals for me and 30 or so mins after ! Also if you can drink with meals all you are doing is washing the food straight thru so the whole concept of the band holding the food in the pouch and making you feel full longer is gone.

My answer is yes and no!!  I was compliant for the first 2 yrs while I was losing weight.  During my maintenance phase I drink whenever I feel like it, before during and after.  I totally agree with the other poster, eat slowly, small bites and moisten your food!  Be very careful as you continue to get fills if you drink with your food it may quickly come back up.  Karianne

Try using a low calorie lubricant for your food.

I sometimes use non fat refried beans (with or w/o a wedge of laughing cow cheese melted in it) as a lubricant for protein.  Goes very well with chicken.  When I use the beans though, I do reduce my 3oz of chicken (or whatever) to 2oz because the beans have protein in them too.

For the whole first year, I did the no drinking 30 min before/after routine.

But as I got more fills and got tighter, that didn't work for me so well.  Now I drink right up until the time my plate is on the table.  I eat my food and then I try not to drink for about an hour afterwards.

I don't get hungry any sooner doing this and I find that I'm more hydrated and less likely to get things stuck. YMMV (your mileage may vary).  If someone decides to  try my way and finds that they are getting hungry too soon, go back to the 30/30 rule.

Best of luck to you.
