HICCUPS!!!!

Hi!  I recently had the lap band surgery (March 17th) and I keep hiccuping like crazy!  I haven't been able to get in touch with my Dr about this yet so I'm hoping someone on here has the answer or has at least had similar episodes.

-What do I need to do to stop the hiccups?
-How long do they last?
-Will my hiccuping bother my band? make it slip? slow healing?

Thanks in advance,
Katie

I had hiccups the first few weeks with my band.  They usually subsided on their own, or I would sip some water and hold my breath.  I have heard of more than a few people who have had them after surgery.  I believe it has something to do with the new pressure on your esophagus from the band.  They should subside on their own, but if it goes on too long, give your doc a call.  Mine were somewhat uncomfortable so soon after surgery (especially since I had had a hernia repair done at the same time), but they got fewer and farther in between.  They bothered me worse at night and always seemed to start as soon as I laid down.  I had no issues with my band.  Take care and best wishes!

Thank you so much!  It makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not alone with the hiccup situation!  I was worried something was wrong with me!  :)

I was just telling my husband after dinner tonight how much I love the fact that I get hiccups when it's time to stop eating. EVERY TIME...and I've had my band 2 and a half years!

Hiccoughs (sorry, Brit spelling) are the result of your diaphragm going into spasm. The diaphragm is near the top of the stomach and so our new pouches can cause gas or food to press against it and there can also be irritation from pressure during the surgery itself.

Should stop! Won't hurt the band. But if it carries on long term, do mention it to your doc.
