2 1/2 weeks Post Op....Alcohol and Carbonation

I don't know how this question is a joke. I had my surgery on March 2nd, and my doctor never really told me I couldn't have these things but he also didn't tell me I could have them so I was asking people how they reacted to having these things.

Sorry if you have been misjudged. I think it was because you asked if you could drink alcohol as freely as water. The answer is so obviously no, for so many reasons, that it made the whole post look odd.

If it was serious - then, no.

Alcohol is empty calories.
Alcohol so soon after surgery is an irritant

Water is essential, whatever form it takes and you need a minumum of 64+oz a day.

Once you are healed, alcohol is fine. But if you want to lose weight, never "as freely as water"!!

Sorry I misworded what I was trying to ask. I am 21 years old and I wanted to have maybe a beer or 2 and was just wondering if there were any restrictions to having it. I am  NOT  going to drink 64 ounces of beer a day lol maybe 16 or 24 at a party on the weekends. I guess it's a good idea to only have one drink and see how I feel. Sorry again.

So...I get how a 21 yr old would want to know about this, but your wording was a bit odd and I am glad you understand how we might have been confused.

You have to be very careful with alcohol with all weight loss surgeries; cross addictions are common (substituting alcohol for food, etc) and with the band, the biggest risk is that you will over-do it and get sick and cause your band to slip (due to vomiting).  I have white wine a couple of times per week, but I make sure I am very hydrated and that I have 8 oz of water between my two glasses of wine.

If you are on 1000 calories per day and you drink two beers (12 oz) you will be using 30% of your calorie allotment for those two beers.  I had a sip of beer in August (3 months post op) and it made me feel like my stomach was going to explode...mind you, it was just a sip!

Mixed drinks could add up to 500 calories each...it just doesn't fit into a weight loss program at all at 500 calories.

No need to apologize...let us know how it goes and work on that profile a bit...

Beer is carbonation - so no you can't have beer .

Im very surprised you doctor or nutritionist didn't advise you on this.  Did you go out of the country for surgery?

Well, I went out of the country and was given more info/education/aftercare than MANY people here on OH.  Please don't judge.  Have you seen the (not so much) protocol of these Lap-Band Mills in the US? Just sayin'. :)

See exactly what you mean!

I do drink alcohol. I didn't for the first few months but I do now.  I also drink carbonated drinks; others are told not to! My doc told me that the carbonated drink thing was a just-in-case measure and that over the years no evidence has shown that it is necessary. However, if your doc says no carbonation - he's medically qualified, I'm not!

A couple of words of caution though:-

*many of us find alcohol has a more noticeable effect than it used to - probably because we drink less of it!

*after a couple of drinks, we tend to get more relaxed about eating and nibble or eat more

*if you do have carbonated drinks, leave for as long as posible after pouring to allow a lot of the fizz to dissipate.

* if we do have carbonated drinks, it can cause painful gas.

no, no, and heck no.  you will be wise to never drink alcohol w your band,  and certianly not 2-3 beers.  you will be flat on your face after only drinking a small portion of one right now.   Your stomach is only as big as a baby's, and your still healing from surgery, so think about it..........  You don't want to jeopardize the healing process, so focus on the real reason you got this tool.  Set your priorities, and if alcohol is on your list of priorities, then discuss it with your doctor before you indulge.   If your doc says it's okay, then it's between you and him.
