2 1/2 weeks Post Op....Alcohol and Carbonation

I am 2 1/2 weeks Post Op and  I was curious if I am allowed to drink alcohol as freely as I would water or a sugar free drink. Also I was curious if I could have Mountain Dew or all carbonated beverages are a no go 2 1/2 weeks in.

Thanks in advance for your input guys and gals!

I am going to assume this is a serious Q and not a wind-up!

No, change of mind! This has to be a wind-up! As far as the alochol is concerned anyway.

Most docs allow carbonated drinks as long as they are not too fizzy but at 2 1/2 weeks post-op anything which deviates in any way from your doc's instructions is to be totally avoided.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

 Are you kidding?
I can't imagine ANY doctor would do this surgery on you and NOT tell you NO MORE ALCOHOL (well maybe 1 glass a week) and NEVER any carbonation due to the damage it can cause your band.  If you are going to drink Alcohol in the same manner and amount of water, kiss your weight loss g'bye!
Sorry for the tuff love.

I have a habit of checking out profiles before responding to posts that are a little off-kilter and your's set off the kilter alarm...so here goes:

No alcohol this early out and no carbonation if that is what your doctor told you.  Follow the post-op instructions you were given.  I don't drink carbonation, because it makes me feel like I'm going to "pop".

Now for the kilter adjustment:  Your profile says you joined OH Feb 26, 2011...about 3 weeks ago and your status is posted as LEARNING ABOUT SURGERY and here you are posting that you are 2 1/2 weeks post op, meaning your surgery was around Feb 28...sort of doesn't add up that you would be learning about surgery and having surgery within 2 days.  Either this post is a "wind up" as Kate called it or you just haven't bothered to complete your profile correctly.

Either way, it is best to keep alcohol consumption to one or two drinks per day max and avoid carbonation, since these are just empty calories and will not help you lose weight.  To drink it as "freely as I would water or a sugar free drink", would imply you have a potential addiction and I would deal with that before having WLS of any kind.

Good luck to you.

You know you are right.  Something is fishy about this.  I thought the question sounded crazy.  I was going to go and delete my post but I decided to let it stay.  Who knows a real person might come along and read this question and our responses might help them make the right choices.  I am just wondering why a person would play games on this board???

It just didn't add up...

My advice about 1-2 drinks per day is what is medically advised for those who have not had WLS and are otherwise healthy, BTW.  Don't want anyone to get the idea that I think 1-2 drinks per day is ok for post-op WLS patients.

Even if it's allowed (which my doctor forbid it) why would you want to drink it???  Do you know how many calories are in those drinks.  I have a co-worker that has been trying to lose weight forever and she drinks coffees and Pepsi and beers everyday.  She consumes more in liquid calories than I EAT all day.  You do realize that drinking these things will slow down your weight loss.  Not to mention the whole point of getting this surgery is to change your lifestyle and habits for a healthier you.

I am not saying this to be mean.  I'm saying this to try to make you see that you might have gotten the surgery but you still have a mind of a fat person and you need to not let that "fat person" in your head win.  The "fat person" will come up with all kinds of excuses and justifications to let you eat and drink things you know you shouldn't have.  Listen to the voice of your surgeon and NUT  Your post sounds like a person that can't even go 2 1/2 weeks following the rules....that's not you is it???  You are stronger than that!!!  If you are able to go a week and not let the fat person win...treat your self to something.

I know there's a debate about carbonated drinks but my doc said never never never.   Once in a great while, I will get a soda at work but I let it sit out for an hour so it won't be so fizzy.

Ironically, the nurse at my doctors office is banded herself. She admittedly has  Dr.Pepper "addiction". She's the nurse in charge of putting the fluroscopy photo of the pouch in each patients file.  She can actually SEE on HER photo of her pouch where the sides  SAG over itself.  Another patient who had the same problem had the same saggy looking pouch.  Does it prove carbonation is bad for the pouch? (Shrug) I dunno but I'm not taking any chances.

THANK YOU!  I am living proof of stretching your pouch due to carbonation.  Granted, my pouch was originally a RNY pouch, not a lap-band pouch, but same difference.  Mine hung over/sagged too and the "sagging" portions of my pouch were actually collecting food particles/drink (where it would ROT), preventing it from being able to go through my stoma.  The flouro photo of it was DIS-GUS-TING.  Nobody understands unless they see the flouro pic.  My doc put me under endoscopy at that point and sucked out the rotten contents.  Then, I required a revision and that is when I had the lap-band placed over my RNY.  It corrected the problem and I LOVE my band!!!!!  Learned my lesson though.

DO NOT DRINK CARBONATION EVER.  Sorry, I speak from experience as opposed to just "having been told" it was bad. People who are fortunate enough to drink soda now and be okay are going to regret it at some point. This is *my* opinion.

Thank YOU for confirming this.  I'm amazed at the number of people who think that carbonated drinks are okay.  I think people believe what they want to believe sometimes.  I hate to see poeple sabotaging their expensive tool though.   You're right...I don't think most of the naysayers would understand until they saw the picture of their own pouch.  I'm SO glad for you that your doctor was able to take good care of you before your stoma got worse.
