I hate to complain, but I am in some pain. I can barely drink anything without feeling like I've eaten an entire watermelon. Does this go away soon? I had my surgery on Thursday morning and last night was the first night I could actually tolerate anything other than water. I've had two shakes (8 oz each) plus a small cup of decaf coffee and that's it today (Saturday).

Is this normal or am I going to explode?

You really must be swollen you poor thing.  I'm about 3 weeks out.  I honestly didn't have too much pain...just got lucky I guess, but I'm sure yours will subside.  Are you able to take a pain killer...did your doc prescribe one in liquid form?

Just rest, and walk, and rest, and walk.  Hope you feel better soon.

I'm taking the Lortab liquid they prescribed. It works for a while, but it wears off. The pain is getting better, though. I think I might have gotten a bit overzealous drinking today. I will give it one more day, though. If it's still this bad Monday, I will call him.

Thanks for the well-wishes!

I didn't have any pain relating to try to drink liquids.  I had no problems drinking liquids...even the day of the surgery I was drinking with no pain.  I think you should call your doctor...like Maria suggested...better safe than sorry.

I couldn't drink much of anything until several days after surgery.  I had the gas pain that felt like it was in the middle of my back.  I also had a fair amount of pain and called the emergency room, cause my surgery was on Friday and I didn't have anything but my doctor's office number.  Anyway, the doctor at the ER told me that the dose I was taking of my pain meds was about half what it should have been.  So, I doubled up and it really helped.  If you can't reach your doctor until Monday, call the hospital where you had your surgery.

Everything is probably fine but whenever you are in any doubt - call your doc! Just one thing - even decaffeinated coffee can still be an irritant. Are you allowed it by your doc at just a few days out?

Remember that they pump air into you when they do surgery, so this will be painful.  I suggest that you begin taking some gas-x strips and maybe this will help.  make sure you are sipping and and not gulping things down as this will cause discomfort.
