new and confused
i had lap band surgery a week ago... had a terrible reaction to the anesthesia and had vomiting for 24 hours.... so had liquids only for a few days after... my first "food" which was pureed lentil soup with protein powder left me in such pain that i litterally fainted... another 24 hours of vomiting....
i must be doing something wrong ?
i hate all of the protein drinks i've tried... actually everything tastes awful post surgery... is this normal ? i've been forcing down the greek yogurt and lots and lots of water.. but i am feeling weak and am getting stressed
i called my physicians office and they said to go back to clear liquids... maybe skim milk and protein powder... that should be soothing on my stomach... ugh.. it makes me gag !!!
i really need help getting through these first few weeks...
also... if i have a shake or something that is 3 ounces... (that's what they told me to have) when would it be safe to have something else ... does water count in the ounces that the stomach holds.
i hate to be so uninformed.. and thought i'd done so much good research... but living it is different from reading about it.
have read lots of posts today from these message boards and everyone here sounds like they are caring and helpful...
i'm hoping you can help me too

Hugs! Sorry your having such a rough time!
As far as the liquid phase, maybe try some G2 or Poweraid Zero so you don't dehydrate. Also the Crystal Light popsicles.
Some proteins taste better than others. Lean Desserts is one of my favorites, also Oh Yeah!, Premier, Lean Body, Nectar. You have to get your protein in so try different ones till u find one u like.
Early out I added protein to my broth and sf pudding. Also did nsa applesauce.
Good luck!!!
Carol, the first thing is to get your nausea under control.
If you're still having issues, try some ginger tea or even candied ginger. (just suck on the candied stuff.. don't swallow it).
You can make your own ginger tea with ginger root, or you can take the easy way and use tea bags. Lipton makes a good tasting ginger tea, but I'm sure other brands will work too.
I only used protein drinks a time or two during my post-op re-feeding program. I sipped on chicken broth, and ate s/f popsicles (the crystal lite ones are pretty good). When I got to where I could have more than clear liquids.. I had canned soup whirled up in the blender. I really liked Campbells Bean w/Bacon, but that's just me. Any that you like should be fine. If you want to be super careful, you can strain the soup after blenderizing it.
Since you are having issues, I'd leave off the protein powder for now, or just add tiny tiny amts. Increase the amount you add each time by a small amount. But seriously, you're not going to have issues not using protein supplements for a few days. Most of us who have WLS have plenty of stuff in storeage.
I don't remember being limited as to serving size.. maybe I was.. hang on while I check my doc's website. Nope, we weren't told only consume so much at a time. Since you were given limits, I'd call my doctor and ask. They should have someone on call available to answer questions.
As long as you're on the phone with them, talk to them about a prescription for something for nausea. You really need not to be vomiting this early post-op.
Hope this helps a little and hope you're feeling better soon.

Carol,
Did your doctor give you a primer fill during surgery? I had a similar experience after surgery and when I went for my 10 day appointment post-op I had a 1/2 cc of saline removed from my band (all that was put in). This made a big difference. I no longer felt like everything going down was coming up. As far as measuring, I wasn't able to drink more than a sip at a time so I kept 100% juices and sugar free popsicles close by to have throughout the day to stay hydrated. Hope you start feeling better soon. It will get better. Kerry
Warm liquids can definitely be soothing..the ginger tea is a great suggestion. I also use Unjury Chicken Broth Protein Powder www.unjury.com. It has the high protein of a shake but is a warm, chicken flavored broth. It is made specifically for bariatric patients. It is a nice change and maybe that will help you get some protein in while not making you gag.
So sorry you are having trouble. It will get better. I am 22 days post op and for the first 21 days, my dr's plan was protein shakes, liquids, and any soup you could get through a wire mesh strainer. No foods, yogurts, puddings, nothing for the first 21 days. Fluids will pass thru your band as your surgery/stitches are healing. I used a medical grade protein powder in Skim milk, I think medical grade Unjury Choc Classis is the best tasting. there is a link at the top of this page. no, it's not a picnic, but you must work hard to meet your protein/fluid goals so you can heal and feel better. During waking hours, I had to drink 2 oz protein at the top of each hour, then 2 oz fluid every 15 minute increments thereafter. at the top of the next hour, do it all again. by the end of the day, you need to drink at least 64 oz. water and approx 80 g protein. so you are pretty much sipping sipping sipping all day long. keep a log of when you drink and you will be able to tell your progress. It was hard for me getting it all in the first 3-4 days, but with time it gets easier. My first 3-4 days, nothing tasted good, so I used alot of apple juice diluted 50/50 with water. or you can mix low sugar grape juice, what ever you prefer. just find somehting that suits your taste and you will be better able to get it down. We're all pulling for you.......yes, its tough, but we've all been there and know that you will get through it. Just stay positive and focus on what you want out of this. take care.
