Ok, so I've been on this board for a couple months so.... just reading.

My big question is, does anyone have a panic/anxiety disorder and had the lap band.  I'm afraid that I will freak out after the surgery and regret it... and send myself into a panic attack.

If this makes any sense to you, please reply.

Thank you,,

I have some anxiety issues and although I never, ever even thought about or expected it, the only negative aftereffect of surgery that I experienced was anxiety and panic. This lasted about 1 week. I take zanax for anxiety on occasion (maybe a couple of times per month). I was very aware that my anxiety was unfounded but I just was a literal wreck. I went to a psychiatrist and he advised me to take my zanax a couple of times a day. Somehow the fact that I was allowed to do this calmed me down and I didn't even need it. I spoke to him three times and he decided not to put me on permanent meds.

I'm perfectly fine now (my surgery was on February 15th). I think that you should talk to a psychiatrist or therapist before your surgery. I give you a lot credit for thinking about this pre-surgery. It totally blindsided me. If you have a plan for how to deal with it ahead of time, I think that half of your potential battle is won. Quite possibly you'll be perfectly fine but if not, you'll know how to deal.

I totally do not regret having the band. I'm really happy that I'm taking care of myself-finally! I've already lost 25 lbs!  I wish the same for you!

Get your docs advice to make a fully informed decision.  I think it's normal to experience occasional thoughts of regret afterwards, let's face it, your body has been through a tremendous change while trying to heal and recoup from anesthesia all at the same time.  BUt with your docs help and working really hard on a positive attitude will take you a long way towards your goals.  Follow your doctors orders to the letter and you will be fine.  The support of family/friends will go a long way too.  Let them know what you need.  You are worth it.
