*MY* personal experience has been nothing but awesome with the band.  It has only been close to 2 years but I hope things continue as they have been with no complications and successful weight loss (well, maintenance in my instance).  This is my experience...YMMV. Good luck with your research - the utmost important part of this journey by far. :)

5 years and totally happy. Lost all excess weight in 15+ months.

Kate

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

7yrs post op, at goal over 4 yrs!!  Still love my band and so grateful I made this choice even though my surgeon was really trying to lean me towards the RNY because the band does have a lot of follow-up commitments after the surgery (at least in the beginning with fills etc).  The weight loss can be slower but steady.

Eventually even those stop for many-I haven't had a fill since 2006.  My only regret was not getting it sooner.  You need to really research and truly understand your own eating issues-what are they?  Would you be better with a surgery that offers malabsorption, or restriction only?  These are things you really need to think about and research.

I am a teacher, my co-worker had the RNY in 12/03 lost all her weight in 9 months, I had the Lap-Band surgery in 4/04 and it took me a solid 2 yrs to lose almost all my weight, and when "I felt" like losing my last 20lbs I did in my 3rd yr.  I probably could have lost it quicker but I didn't exercise regularly in the beginning-oh well I didn't care just as long as I was losing.

Goodluck and please understand this is only one of many boards on the lap band.  There are other groups such as smartbandsters etc.  Post everywhere but remember in the end this is your surgery and success-I wish you luck! Karianne

I am afraid of the same thing.  My surgeon seems to be leaning me more towards the bypass.  But in m y heart and my gut (no pun intended) the band just "feels" right.   I am worried I wont lose enough weight.  I'm at 279 as of this morning and I have to start my liquid diet tomorrow.  I am scheduled for my band 3/23.  Because I got scheduled so fast, they said I wouldn't have to be on the liquid for the full 2 wks.  But  I wish I knew more people who had the band.  I only know people who had the bypass.  But I think this site seems like a great wealth of info....Thanks guys..

Here are some threads for you to review...I am very happy with my band...most are, but there are some who just take up a lot of space posting their negative experiences.  Just review the board and reach out to some of the seasoned bandsters and those who have revised...be sure to check out their profiles too, to get a better perspective of their experience.  That is what I did and it really helped me to make an informed decision.

i LOVE my band. it has only been 3 months post op for me and i have lost 43.5lbs. i feel so much better. i have run into any problems as of yet and i love the foods i can eat (which is almost everything within reason).

also, jean mcmillan has left a reply for you regarding your post. i STRONGLY recommend her book "bandwagon". i bought it a few weeks after my lap band proceduer and i have read the whole thing. i have to say it is very very helpful. she certainly gives good advice on how to be successful with your band. i recommend it highly....thanks jean!
