Arising out of Steph's post... NSAIDs

My doctor doesn't want us to use NSAIDs either, but if they are needed.. here are the parameters he gives.

200 mg in the AM, 200 mg in the afternoon, and take a prevacid or prilosec at bedtime.  The PPI (proton pump inhibitor), which is the prevacid or prilosec, is supposed to help protect the stomach.
We can do this for a MAXIMUM of two weeks and preferrably much less.

I finally had to resort to this for a week as I had an injury to my elbow that time and splinting and reducing my weights at the gym just was not helping. Injured it in August.. had nursed it along w/o nsaids for 3 or 4 months. Ibuprofen for a week finally fixed the inflamation.  I'm just hoping that the prilosec will prevent any erosions.  :::keeping fingers crossed::::

I am going to have to have a discussion about this with my surgeon as soon as we return home from vacation. I have had such intense pain this winter that I risked blowing my liver with too much acetomenophine. I finally resorted to using enteric coated aspirin once a day just to prolong the intervals between doses of the acetomenophen. I may be facing hip replacement surgery, though if that isn't the problem someone had better come up with an answer because I cannot take lying on the sofa in tears after attempting to walk for more than a few minutes at a time. I even resorted to buying a cane, in hopes it will help. So far it has not, though it is really snazzy, being pink with roses on it. It was very difficult for me to take that step but I am truly desperate. At this point I feel as if I am walking a tightrope. I cannot face going back to the cold weather early, but I sure haven't been able to enjoy the wonderful weather here like I love to do. Getting groceries puts me down for the rest of the day.

Pain control isn't always easy to balance with our bands. I thought I would never again touch another NSAID, Losing weight has helped but it hasn't given me a new body.

You poor thing! Sounds awful! How long has it been this bad?

My own doc told me that he didn't believe we were at any more risk than anyone else (from NSAIDs) and that NSAIDs were meds that did wonderful things but that we all, banded and unbanded, needed to be aware of the risks of long term use - which , of course, we all knew!

This article appears to be giving the advice that used to be the case earlier on; when the majority of docs said that they were to be used by bandsters only when the benefits outweighed the specific risk for bandesters.

Let us know what yoru doc tells you!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

All this started late Nov. and got worse from there. I have had some good days but the majority are not. I cannot believe how old I feel. My outlook right now, which I try to control, is pretty bleak. I try to remind myself of the good things. I am so very grateful for everything my band has done for me, but this is a pretty big thing, right now. Normally I am pretty optimistic but with this wearing on I am having a hard time not being a whiner. Thankfully, Jean has been a big booster.
All in all, I will survive to fight another day!

As you know Granny...we can live without a stomach but not without a liver...don't risk "blowing" your liver.  I lost my brother at age 40 to tylenol overdose, it was a miserable death.

That said, I have a knee that needs replacing and a bad back that pretty much had me where you are, going to the grocery store would have me feeling faint, in a cold sweat and nauseous from the pain.  With therapy and chiropractic treatment, I have gotten a bit better, but remember so well those horrible days...I am so sorry you are going through this now.

Hang in there, there must be other options for those of us with chronic debilibating pain.

I finally called my Dr's office and they said it was OK for ME to take the baby aspirin. My office does all 3 WLS, so they asked specifically if it was lap band, so maybe the other 2 cannot. humm? Of course follow what YOUR Dr recommends for you.
