Weight loss stall post surgery

I was banded 3 weeks, 3 days ago and am concerned that since I've been on soft foods I've levelled off on the weight loss.  I'm eating what's on the diet, and measuring it out, but not dropping anymore.  I saw my family doctor one week after surgery (2 weeks ago) and since then I've only lost 2 pounds and nothing at all in the last 5 days.  HELP??  What am I doing wrong??

You aren't doing anything wrong. Your body is adjusting to solid foods after weeks on liquids. Just keep following your surgeon's directives and make sure you are getting in all of your protein. Keep drinking, taking your vitamins...you are still healing. Be kind to yourself and most of all.....be patient. The weight will come off!!!!!!!

If I recall correctly, I actually gained a few pounds when I started mushies.  You're just getting a few more calories and your body may be holding onto what it has in fear you'll be going back to liquid starvation!  It will settle down and you'll start losing again, just give it time.  You're not going to lose a pound EVERY day......

The following explanation is courtesy of Diana Cox.

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Thanks, Kate, the voice of reason.  Makes sense doesn't it?  To the others who offered advice, thank you.  I find this site particularly helpful in such situations.  I must admit though the amount of liquids required is a challenge to meet.  I will strive harder to up my intake to the full 64 ounces.  I was worried that despite the incisions I wasn't really banded at all. lol

Totally normal.  what happens is your stomach swelling is going down and your band is pretty much empty.   Right now its not all about loss, but about healing.
Trust me I got so frusterated during weeks 3-5 because I wasn't losing and actually I gained a pound back.  My doc went out of town so my first fill wasn't until week 7 post op.
I just had my second fill and now I feel like its starting to melt off.

Measure yourself if you haven't already and keep track. I was losing inches but not so much in pounds.
Your doing fine!  Your not doing anything wrong.   My nutritionist said don't worry so much about weighing and measuring all the time but make sure you get your protein amounts in everyday.
Keep us updated and stay positive.

I'm so glad this topic was covered.  I'm 3 wks post-op and have gained 2lbs.  I'm so happy to hear that this is common.  It was such a tease losing 25lbs in the first two weeks, but everything you all posted makes sense to me.  Thanks!!!

I too am glad to here I am not th eonly one.  I was banded on March 4th and lost weight consistantly for the first week.  Now, for the past 4-5 days I have actually gained 1-2 pounds back.  I am getting in my protein and am eating as my doctor suggested.  I would love to here if any of you have started to lose again since your last posts???

I'm in week 5 now and haven't lost or gained on the scale.  However, I'm definitely losing inches.  Make sure you use that measuring tape...
