After surgery pain

I am a real wimp when it comes to pain. Honestly I would have had this surgery (Lapband) last year but the thought of surgery and the pain after surgery has me scared to death. I know my health is crtically in danger if I keep the weight on but as crazy as it sounds I am so worried about the pain after surgery.
Can some of you share with me your experience!

the pain from the surgery was minor. I think the hardest part of the surgery for me was the difficulty I had getting comfortable to sleep! I am a tummy sleeper and of course I could not sleep that way immediately afterwards. I finally gave up and slept in my recliner for the first couple of days. Some have difficulty with gas pain, but I did not really have this, as I walked allot for days (I actually drove myself from the surgery center, although someone was with me, then drove over 17 hours to a conference two days later.). It has been the best thing I have ever done for myself : )
I had liquid pain medicaton, but by the end of the second day I would just forget to take it.

I was very lucky I had no pain from my surgery .  I had no gas pains, no incision pains no nothing .

I did alot of walking though and that helps to get the gas out and it helps for you to heal quicker also .  As soon as I got back to my room I was up within 15 min walking and I did not stop for a good four hrs.  I walked walked and walked.  When I got tired I sat down in the chair for about 20 min rested and right back up again .

I had surgery at 1pm back to my room at 3 pm and home at 7 pm that night.  I was suppose to spend the night but I was doing so well they let me go home.

And trust me Im the biggest biggest baby when it comes to pain and especially needles.  Im scared to death of needles and I got the lapband done lmao makes no sense does it lol.

Anyways , its a very easy surgery before you know it you will be awake back into your room .

The only thing I felt the entire healing process was my upper stomach felt like I did a million and one sit ups but it wasn to the point I had to take pain meds for it either.

I only took pain meds the first 48-72 hrs and that was because of hubby it made him feel better for some reason lol , and even then I only took a half of a pill .  :o)

Dont worry its a simple easy surgery !!!

Good Luck

easiest surgery I have ever had! My worst day was the day after and it was gas pain but it was not aweful! I only took pain meds for 3 days and then only 1-2 doses of pain meds a day. I had my surgery on Tues and was driving by friday....I've lost 85lbs since last Feb......best thing I ever did for me:)

I'm not going to lie & say mine was painless as I'd rather you went in to it expecting some pain & then be pleasantly surprised if you don't find it bad. I had quite considerable pain the first 4 days, but nothing that I couldn't handle. I also had a high fever, sickness & gas pain, but all this subsided after the first week & I've not looked back since!
I've lost a steady pound a week, every week since so its the best thing I've ever done for my health!!!

I have to say my surgury was a breeze!!! I got up when they wheeled me back to my room and started walking as soon as i got back to my room!!! I didnt experience any gas because I walked so much!!! They didnt go thru my belly button as some Drs do. It was the easiest surgury Ive ever experienced!!! I love my band!! Ive lost 39 pounds since Nov 10, 2010!!!! I'd do it all again!!! It all depends on your Dr....Dr. Nease from Huntington is my Dr. and he is AMAZING!!!! Just follow the rules and the band WILL work!!! It's only a tool!!! you have to make it work!!! A friend of mine has lost over 100 pounds in less than a year and a half so far!!!!

I had a hiatal hernia repair so my post op discomfort was a bit more than it would have been.  That said, your co-morbidities will eventually result in you having surgeries as a result of wear and tear on your joints, cardiovascular disease, etc.  Why not prevent the pain of future surgeries and resulting loss of quality of life by having your weight loss surgery now?  All surgery is uncomfortable, the lap band surgery was sort of in the middle of the pack...I have had breast surgery (removal of a golf ball sized benign tumor), bilateral ectopic pregnancy, hand repair (hand vs meat slicer), knee surgery, vaginal hysterectomy and many minor surgical procedures...this was comparable with my hysterectomy or hand repair.  The other surgeries were way higher on the pain scale than lap band.

You and I must be cut from the same cloth.  Tell your doctor you have a low pain tolerance.  I did that, got some extra pain killer and really only needed it a couple of days.  I think the second day was the worst.  It is worth it trust me.  It is not a miracle worker but I know I wouldn't be down 70lbs without it.

The best part is all the great help you will get from this site

I'm 5 days post op (Lap) and my ab pain is minimal.  I had pain meds immediately after surgery, stayed in the hospital one night and asked for pain meds, my pain level was 6-7. but the pain meds helped alot.  you just have to make sure you ask soon enough for the med before the pain gets to another level.  Once home, I took 2 tylenol the first night and haven't needed any since.  The walking helps alot.  Still have a little gas, but nothing major.  My only issue right now is that I still feel a bit weak and that's from anesthesia recoup is what I'm being told.  Having to pay close attention to the fluid and protein goals, that slips up on you before you konw it.

I really want to thank each of you that replied to my post. Your experiences really floored me. I never thought that I would hear so many of you tell me that the pain was not excruciating or even close to severe. It gave me a lot of courage and a positive attitude to go ahead and opt for the Lapband. I scheduled my appointment for late March at Lenox Hill Hospital and will receive my consultation.
I can tell you honestly that all your responses gave me the guts to make the appointment and hopefully I will be approved for the surgery.

Thank you all so much for the encoragement.
