Size Six Dress!!

While on Itunes last night, I found out my old high school classmate put out another album that I DIDn't have.  Sara Hickman is well known in the Austin TX music scene and I have all her albums now (except for the children's lullaby albums she made). I now have 99 of her songs on my ipod including this one she wrote  about (get THIS!) a girl who had WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY.      The song is kinda cool & I thought you guys might like it:   ( I copied the lyrics from her website www.sarahickman.com)

Size Six Dress

There was a little operation
Her mom told her it was for the best
After surgical invasion
Her body weighed 80 pounds less

Changed her body, changed her clothes
Skirts high, shirts cut low
Needing a whistle
Needing a sign
To prove that the fat girl died

CHORUS:
Who's this mess in the mirror looking back?
Less is more, less is happiness, I guess
Are you happy now there's half of me...?
Love is more than a size six dress

Obsessed with her thighs and breasts
Food is tasteless and who'd have guessed
Once afraid...Twice ashamed
Feeding addictions that have no name

CHORUS

These hidden fears are staying near
They cause the pain
That eats me up inside
There's no surprise this thin disguise
This crazy game...this stupid side show ride....

Who's this mess in the mirror looking back
Less is more... less is happiness I guess
Here's a thought I'm all I've got
I've got to change to be set free
This stupid game... this private shame
Only hurts me
Can you be happy with who I've grown to be....?

Love is more...than a size six dress
Love is more love is more
Than a size six dress...

My sincere apologies to anyone who was saddened or felt insulted.  That was certainly not my intent.  I guess that even though we are all connected by WLS, we are all at different points of the journey and can have different reactions.    Sara is one of the most compassionate people I know.  For me, the song reminds me that its not just about the numbers but how I am INSIDE that counts.  I too sometimes secretly desire the wolf whistles and attention...at other times, I look in the mirror and still see the fat girl.

 Thank you for sharing that!

I think it's a wonderful description of the riot of emotions we go through as we lose weight.  We love the attention, but still struggle with loving ourselves and our own bodies.

Thank you Tami.  You said it better than me. :-)

There's really a good message in her words, but it *is* a little sad and scary.  Our bodies, even when fitting in a size six dress aren't always what we dreamed about when embarking on this journey.  Getting dressed up and struttin' your stuff in a size six dress is a lot different than standing nekkid in front of a mirror.  But, if we can't accept our new bodies, wrinkles, excess skin and all, are we more likely to self-sabotage or end up with cross addiction (or blowing the retirement fund on plastics)?

"I've got to change to be set free.  This stupid game...this private shame only hurts me."

Amen, sister!

I think you should post this on the main board.  I'd be curious to see more people's interpretation.  Whether they like it or not, it's something we all share.

I listened online, and I like her music.  I think I'll download!

I *did* post it on the main board at first by accident.  I only got one response and I couldn't tell if she was being sarcastic or not. (shrug).    I prefer to think she wasn't.  That's the difficulty of messageboards - you just can't always hear the intended tone.

Yeah. I agree there's a twinge of sadness to it that I didn't see at first.    Sara is a sweet soul who gives up so much of her time helping the whoever-needs-help...be it orphans in third world countries or our own soldiers facing the hardships of useless wars.  A true folk singer.  You should check out some of the videos she has on Youtube.  Especially "Mad World".    She has such a pure voice.  One of my favorite memories is singing and playing guitar with her in the high school courtyard, going through all the Carly Simon songs she knew.

Have a great weekend! It's beeeeutiful here in SE Texas.  Think I'm going to dig out my camera and take some pictures. Today is my 6 month bandiversary so I want to post new pics!
