diet soda once in a while?
When i was first banded, all carbonated drinks were prohibited. But then docs started to say that we could have them! I was told the original prohibition was a just-in-case measure and that as no evidence has emerged to say they can harm us, most docs have relaxed the rule.
I do have carbonated drinks but if they are too fizzy, I get bad gas!

Happily banded since May 2006. Regain of 28lbs 2013-14. ALL GONE!
But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,
I don't think it's worth drinking a whole can/bottle of soda with the risk of stretching your pouch or the slippery slope of getting back in the habit of drinking them all the time.
That being said, I have had occasional sips of a diet coke (two or three times in nearly 2 years) and recently had a mimosa (champagne & orange juice). I personally don't want to go back to where diet coke was about all I drank. I was poisoning my body.. I know, sounds like a radical statement, but there was a study recently published that said that the caramel color used in cokes is a carcinogen. OK in moderate amounts, but the way I drank them wasn't moderate.
Then there's the fact that sodas discolor our teeth and leach calcium from our bones.... ack.. get me off my soapbox!!! ::grin::
You have to make the decision if it's worth it to you and if you can keep it as moderation. Also if they don't give you any pain. To me, they're just not worth it. YMMV. :)

I rarely drink Diet Coke because the carbonation hurts so much.
I don't think the occasional soda will kill you, but it's not going to do you any good, either, and it could do you harm (leaching calcium from the bones, for example). And don't count that soda as part of your 64 ounces a day liquids.

I have it as a rare thing and don't have any issue. That being said, I would encourage you to just have it rarely. Research is showing that the sweet tase can stimulate our bodies to act as if they have had real soda. These studies were between those using diet soda and those not having any. Even if this were not the case I would still choose that way I have.

My surgeon says that occasional soft drinks (calorie free) are allowed.
From my personal experience, I think that they stimulate my appetite -- and make me want to drink/eat simultaneously.
I gave them up before surgery --- then, about 3 months post op, i started to have 1 or 2 a month.
That worked its way up to one per week ----
When I started to want one every day, I stopped drinking them again -- I don't need the caffeine and artificial colors/sweetners calling to me.

This was a good question...I was a diet coke afficionado up until 12-28-10 when I had to prepare for pre-op - I was thinking just last night ugh it hasn't even been two months yet! I haven't missed them as much as I thought I would, but I would like to think on occassion, I could have one - I love fountain drinks especially. So, at least I know that on occassion I can have a treat to myself, which is a nice thought, although moderation is good and I don't want band slippage...
