do some doctors say no?

Many doctors say no. The only surgery type that has a higher regain than bypass is banding. I'm speaking long term.

By 15 years it is showing a 13% loss in excess weight.

There are other procedures that are simply safer and more effective.

The band got me to goal, the sleeve will keep me there.

Well, my doctor never said "no" but he definitely "strongly suggested" that I consider the RNY...multiple times.  Ultimately he left the decision up to me and after being denied by BCBSNC for the sleeve, I got the band.  I chose not to appeal, I believe that everything happens for a reason, and I couldn't be happier with my band.

This is my theory about why some surgeons seem to be against the band for certain patients:  I think that they have experiences where a patient may start out on the journey considering the RNY.  As time goes on, said patient researches and gets scared about the re-routing and malabsorption associated with the RNY, and subsequently settles on the band thinking that it will "basically do the same thing" in terms of getting the weight off.  When that doesn't happen, the patient gets frustrated and disappointed that the band didn't "work as advertised".  This is just my humble opinion of why some surgeons maybe seem to be against the band for some patients.  I haven't conducted any official research to date.    This is just the impression that I got from my surgeon, who asked me on my first follow up appointment if I'd "been cheating".  I really do love Dr. Tyner, but geez...Thanks for believing in me.  I let it roll off my back though  because I'm determined and less than 2 months post-op, I'm almost down 40lbs.  I make healthy choices, eat about 6 times a day, and move my ass for at least an hour a day.  My weight loss is because of a lifestyle change, not because I physically can't eat or "never seem to be hungry".

Fight for what you want, and just remember that sometimes second opinions are in order.

i came into this needing to lose between 80-100 pounds.  when i had the initial visit with my surgeon and told him that i wanted the lapband, he told me that if i were any heavier, he would not do the lapband, that I would have to find another doctor to do.  my doctor does not like lapbands, does not encourage them, but does use them if the patient's have less than 100 lbs to lose and refuse the other surgeries.

You sure can.  YOU are the client, YOU have the ultimate say-so in what surgery you receive.

BTW:  I was 383 and 51 y/o and got banded.  I'm close to 2 years out and have lost 180+ lbs.  The band IS more work than other WLS's, but there are advantages & disadvantages to all of them.
