An FYI - Heartburn

Here’s an FYI that I didn’t know about until it happened to me. I made some spicy chili about a week ago. After I ate it, I experienced heartburn. I’m not one who usually gets heartburn (and I usually don’t eat spicy foods). I’m also not one to just pop a pill and besides, I didn’t even have Tums in the house, so I thought, it will go away on its own. I woke up the next day and felt like my band was tighter. I still experienced some burning, so I ate carefully. A few days go by with my band feeling really tight and I was have increasing problems eating. Now I was having to sleep sitting up because of the heartburn and the fact that I would wake up occasionally coughing-choking. So now I’m starting to worry. Did my band slip? I made an appointment and found out that by not treating my heartburn I created a perpetuating problem. It started with the heartburn which irritated my stomach opening. This made my band feel tighter and made it harder for food to empty out, which caused more heartburn which irritated me more.. and so on. The Doctor took some fluid out, I’m treating the heartburn, and I feel 100% better. If I would have taken something for the heartburn right away, I probably wouldn’t have suffered so much. In a couple of week, I should be able to have the fluid put back in- lesson learned.

Thank you for your warning! I tossed all of my tums after my surgery.  I should probably keep some on hand just in case!

I am currently having the same problem. After reading your post I can attribute my heartburn to some spicy food I ate over the weekend (two spicy meals to be exact). Do you have any tightness feelings in the back of your throat?

Just please don't take TUMS or Rolaids for heartburn.  Those contain calcium carbonate.  As the Ca Carbonate leaves your stomach it triggers a chemical called gastrin to be released, that causes rebound acid.  IOW, you end up with more acid than you started off with.

Something like Gaviscon won't do that.
