How long do you think the food actually "stays" in the pouch??

My docs instructions were to wait 30 min...I think the food is pretty much gone by 45 min to one hour...the no drinking while eating is to ensure that the vagus nerve is triggered and your brain gets the signal that you are full (at least that is my understanding) for about 4 hours or so.

I always drink a bottle of water after my last meal of the day to ensure my pouch is empty before bed.

Well, my brain tells me that my pouch should empty in just a few minutes.

But, my band tells me different --- that when I try to drink a few minutes after eating, I feel blocked (sometimes).

I tried drinking about 30 minutes after eating, and I seem to get hungry sooner.

I did a 'trial and error' experiment --- and waiting an hour is better for me  -- makes me feel satisfied longer.

Thanks!! I will stick to my 1 hour wait then. :)  It seems to be working for me right now.

Drinking with food for sure washes the food through faster.  I am very bad about this.  I find it a very hard rule to follow.

We used to be told that the food starts to move through straightaway but that if we eat dense protein first, it will be a good 20 mins before it makes any appreciable movement through and longer to empty entirely.

I believe (see the article by Dr Terry Simpson that regulalry gets posted on here) that docs now think it happens faster than this. He actually says that they have changed their view on this.

In my own case, I experimented! I can drink 20 mins after a meal without any noticeable diminution in the length of time before I feel hunger again.

That is exactly why I am asking the question.  I re-read the article last night and it got me thinking... why are we waiting to drink if they believe the food is really passing through in a matter of minutes. ???

Try trial and error like I did (very carefully!!). Before the 20 mins and it either hurts or I get hungry too soon. 20 mins seems fine for me. But clearly not for everyone!  Kate

Thanks. Maybe I will have to do my own trial and error. I have an office visit tomorrow so I will pick my surgeons brain on this.
