Any Insulin Resistant Banders? Metformin & diet question.
I went to my RE yesterday and am getting back on track with Metformin to control my insulin resistance. He wrote me RX for liquid Metformin... but I just got a call that it is backordered until March. So now he is writing RX for Metformin that isn't extended release so I can cru**** and take it that way. (YUCK!)
So two part question:
What should I mix it with to mask the taste?
Have you made any additional adjustments to your diet for insulin resistance?

Pre-surgery, I was on 1500 mg of Metformin ER daily for my PCOS. I actually stopped taking it before my surgery on 1/21 and I haven't started taking it again yet. I'm having bloodwork done next week and my doctor will decide then whether to put me back on the Met or not. None of which helps you... sorry...
BUT. I would mix the crushed met with something with a strong taste like peanut butter or maybe dissolve the crushed tablets into something hot to drink. As far as my dietary adjustments so far, I haven't really made anything but I'm eating fewer cards than I used to which I think will help with the IR, which was fairly mild to begin with, the greater benefit from the Met for me was that it lowered testosterone levels, also a big PCOS ******
Anyway, good luck!

Thanks! I was on 1500mg years back and stopped taking it when we stopped fertility treatments. Not sure why I stopped. Anyway... my new RE explained things really well for me yesterday and I plan on staying on Metformin for ME this time. He wants me on 2000mg though.... yikes... I am not looking forward to the GI issues again. I am hopeful it may help with the weight loss though!
I am pretty low carb now as well. My diet pre-band was atrocious... so I don't feel like I need to make too many changes anymore. I don't eat bread, rice, or pasta... and I know those are all big no no's with IR.
I can't remember if fruit is on the no no list ???

Oh I hear you on the fertility treatments. 18 months of hell on this end with nothing to show for it aside from conquering my fear of needles. Twice daily rounds of injections, IUI's, daily blood draws, the whole she-bang. Not to mention the 60-70 pounds I piled on while doing them. Don't miss that one bit!
I don't truly follow the super low carb diet, instead I follow the idea of eating "Real Food", so for me fruit is absolutely allowed. (well, as soon as I can eat fruit again...). But I abstain from all processed flours, artificial sweeteners, potatoes, white rice, etc. Basically if it's white, it doesn't go on my plate. I don't anything with more than 5 ingredients or with ingredients I can't pronouce. Also nothing low-fat, fat-free, or with imitation ANYTHING. It ends up being a naturally low carb diet and is supposedly great for IR along with a myriad of other metabolic conditions.
