menstrual cycle

Well ever since my surgery my menstrual cycle has been more regular, which is a plus! But this month I seem to be a week late. I had sex, which was unprotected and I've taken a home pregnancy test which gave me a negative response. Could it be my shift of hormones that's not allowing the hcg (hormone that determines pregnancy in urine) or is it that the hormone change in my body is altering my cycle? Has anyone else dealt with this before?.

Any time you have unprotected sex, there is a risk of pregnancy.  Pregnacy tests often give a false positve, so repeat in a week.  If you still haven't gotten your "monthly gift" call your doctor.

I don't know about the hormone change altering anything as I've not yet been banded, but just wanted to say I agree with the PP. Wait a week and retest. If it's still negative, call your doctor and request a blood test. I've known a few women that have been up to a month late and the HPT's have been negative. Some have even had negative blood tests, but they were actually pregnant. Some women it just takes longer for the HCG to build up to give a positive test.

As the above poster said, anytime you have unprotected sex there is a chance!!!!!!

But for me personally there are 3 words that describe my menstrual cycle after my band  and weight loss.....

I had my surgery on 12/22, and I was actually on my last day of my cycle on surgery day!!  Lucky me!  But anyway I usually am right on schedule with mine, and haven't gotten mine either.  Skipped January completely, and I KNOW I am not pregnant, had a tubiligation in 2007!!  So maybe the change in your body, but yes I agree with everyone pregnancy tests do show false results.   It also can be too early to take the test.  Good luck with everything!

I started my cycle almost as soon as I started my pre-op diet on 1/7/11 and then AGAIN about 2 days post-op on 1/23.  Losing weight wreaks havoc on your menstrual cycle.  The reason for that is that a large majority of the predominately female hormones are stored in your fat cells.  And as those cells shrink, they release higher levels of the stored estrogen and progesterone and all those goodies.  This can make our bodies (and specifically our cycles) really go haywire.

So in general... the only thing you can expect, especially if you've been irregular in the past, is the totally unexpected.  I've actually started using an app on my phone to keep up with my cycles and it's been a lifesaver.

Obviously, with sex, you can't rule out the risk of pregnancy but I would put my money on it just being the changes in your body as you lose weight.  Hope you get whichever outcome you are wishing for though!
