Port Incision Problem?

I noticed a couple of weeks ago my port incision was really red, inflamed and felt thicker than usual. (I'm about 4 1/2 months post-op) I haven't had drainage but the incision line is now peeling.  The redness is completely around the incision. It itches and the whole port area feels a little sore.  I finally gave up and went to the doctor today.  He put me on an antibiotic. Both the PA and Dr. said it looked like something had been going on but appears to be healing-that time will tell. They seemed puzzled. Has anybody else had a similar problem? I still feel restriction so I don't think my band has slipped. Thanks. Kerry

Kerry,

I haven't had that happen, but I have to say that if it were me, I'd insist on an upper GI x-ray or even an endoscopy. A late (months after surgery) port infection like you describe is often associated with band erosion. The erosion can cause infection, and the bacteria travel down the tubing to the port.

I hope that's not the case with you, but I'd sure want to rule that out. The treatment for band erosion is removal of the band. It's not a medical emergency, but it's urgent enough to indicate quick, aggressive treatment.
